I kinda wished he would end up with Marty somehow in the end...

I know that could sound somewhat weird, but they had a lot of chemistry, despite the age gap. Plus, its natalie portman! She's just so charming and funny in every role since she was a child. But anyway, he could have realistically waited 5 years and given it a shot. He's probably right, she'll never remember him in 5 years... but I don't know, I still wish they had ended up together somehow, some way.

agreed, like maybe when she turned 18 he was perhaps single and they re-connected, and fell in love for good.

although some would probably still be lookin at them weird cuz he'd be mid 30s and she 18, but i don't think they would care either.

reply

yeah i think that too, she was terrific and like he said she would have been something amazing at 18. i wish he would have waited-- he didn't seem like he liked Tracey (that was her name right) enough to not wait.

I couldn't hear my own footsteps. It was the walk of a dead man.

"he could have realistically waited 5 years and given it a shot."

I don't think that's very realistic at all and is the exact reason he emotionally moved on. Being 29 and waiting for a 13 year old girl to develop for 5 years so that you can have a healthy relationship with her just isn't going to happen anywhere except for Hollywood. The movie does a good job of making the viewers want the relationship to foster, but once the credits roll, it's back to reality and we should all know nothing short of disaster would come out of it.

Everyone dances around this frking "18" number.

Well, the 15th anniversary of the movie is in 2011, when the graduating class of Birdman, Willie, etc etc will be holding their 25th reunion, when Willie will be about 43, and Marty about 28.

So ya never know...

This movie is in my top 4 or 5...Before Sunrise will always be #1. I'm thrilled that there are others who love BG as much as I do! We'd all like to imagine sequels and even write up storylines (some of you are very creative); however, certain movies really shouldn't be remade or sequeled - they live in our memories and achieve perfection there. For example, remember that special trip you took as a teenager or in your early 20s...a trip that defined your life let's say. Years later you want to recapture the exact same magic, but you see it differently now and the trip is not the same...that's the point I'm trying to make about special movies such as BG.

On that note, if a sequel HAD to be made, "Beautiful Girls II" would be too lame a title...the only logical choice would be "Beautiful Women".

I kind of had the same sentiment, what with me being totally infatuated with Natalie Portman right now, but the smile she gave at the end after he kissed her on the cheek made everything worth it.

And then in the trivia section it says it wasn't planned out that she would smile so nicely, and I'm not sure if I should be glad because it was totally genuine or sad because it wasn't a bout of great acting.

Had the two lived happily ever after, it would have destroyed the realism of the entire film, especially the Willie/Marty subplot. It was perfect the way it was. Marty was symbolic of his youth and the romanticizing of his childhood/hometown, and like all well adjusted adults, have to move on in the real world.

I think the main reason people seem so hung up on this aspect of the movie is that it's a dominating factor yet so little time is actually spent on their friendship. They leave you wanting more, which is how both characters feel as well.

The two characters gave us foreshadowing about their doomed/forbidden love when they talked about Romeo and Juliet. For a sequel to have them get together would compromise that, but then again, it would be interesting to see what everyone is doing now ala Before Sunset.

In a weird symbolic way, I think Tracy IS Marty (all grown up of course). Marty intrigues Willie because she represents his lost youth - he's jealous that she has her whole life in front of her. But when Marty grows up I bet you she would be a lot like Tracy. The life lesson here is that Willie must learn to appreciate what he has right now instead of constantly searching for some "ideal."

Sometimes it seems the best chemistry comes from the comfort of knowing the relationship will never be romantic. You've never been friends with someone that you knew they sort of liked you, you knew you sort of liked them. Every time you saw them, they'd hint some sort of attraction. But either they or you are already in a serious relationship, or perhaps both of you? It's that magical two way street of two people simultaneously longing for something they know they can't have. I've had a few platonic friends like this (not underage, like in the case of Willie, lol). It's just something you've got to let go, because it will eventually pass. I don't believe meaningful relationships are built on such an attraction. I think they're instead built on two single people being friends, having interesting things in common, and a spark ignited from that friendship.
