And the coloured girls go...

In the ice skating scene, right after Willy quotes Romeo and Juliet, Marty sings this Lou Reed's song :
...and the coloured girls go :
Doo dodoo dodoodoo doo dodoo...

What's the significance of this verse ? I can't get it.
Does she invite Willy to "take a walk on the wild side" ?
Is it just a song ?
... ?

i'll tell you exactly why i think she sings that tune.

it's because she was bringing him back down to earth by mocking his attempt at trying to keep up with her intelligence and relevance.

he's trying to 'compete' with her for intelligence by quoting the only Shakespeare he knows (duh - the one part that everyone knows in Romeo and Juliet). he's trying to be as literary and relevant as she is. and he does it in such an awkward way, that basically she's laying a smack-down on him for it by quoting another over-quoted line (this time a song - lou reed).

get it?

That was more or less the impression I got from that scene.

I totally agree. Also, she was just being playful, bringing the conversation back to the playful level.

I liked the line.

He was quoting Shakespeare and being too deep & serious, so Marty interrupted him to kid around, sort of to let him know "okay dude, lighten up." When I was 13 I knew lyrics of songs from 20 & 30 years before. I don't think there was any sexual reference or invitation to the song's lyrics. Willie is a very smart man and everyone knows that, like when he is talking to Moe about Marty and telling him that he feels like a Nabokov character and Moe looks at him like who?? but won't ask who Nabokov is, so that he doesn't feel stupid. I'm sure Willie has done some obscure reference to his other friends, the fact that Marty stopped him cold and made fun (in a sweet way)of it just made him like her even more. See his reaction after he does this. He probably realizes he has had interesting, funny and tender moments and conversation with this 13 year old than he has with his girlfriend, but he knows that he can't go there. This film has so many layers to its characters. If there was an Oscar given for an ensemble cast, this film truly deserved it!!! I have watched this film over 20 times and never get tired of it. In fact I always discover something new about it. It could be a look or a gesture or a line that a character says. Fantastically acted and directed. 5 stars!!!!!

He was being deep and serious by quoting classic literature and she was lightening the mood by following it up with classic pop. It also showed her maturity and "worldliness" as most girls her age are into whatever is on the charts at that moment.

Rule #76: No excuses. Play like a champion.

This is a classic refrain from the songs in the Motown era. It's just a case of Marty being silly.

I think it's at least the second time Marty has brought up Shakespeare so willy is trying to be clever/making an impression by quoting some. Marty responds quickly with a quote from Lou Reed. Who better to quote to a NYC bar musician born in the 60s?
I have to admit its awkward but I still get pretty bumbly when I try to flirt.
