Weird

I'm sure this has been discussed far too many times, but I'm watching this for the first time now, and I don't think there's anything cute, or sweet, about Hutton's character and Marty's interactions. I just finished the ice skating scene and I think it's weird. I had the same reaction his red headed buddy had lol

Well it is a fictional story.

To me those scenes with the girl were to show that even though he was a grown man he was still immature in some ways regarding girls and women. In the end he realized that his fantasy about the young girl was misplaced and he formed a renewed view of his real relationship. So those interactions with the young girl were essential for him to get past all that. If he had never met Marty he would have remained essentially like all those old friends of his, holding out for a perfect, beautiful girl. Which of course he already had but hadn't fully realized it yet.

Really good post Mike. You really nailed it. It is pretty interesting and frankly ironic that it had to be the young 13-year old girl that ultimately made Willie mature and escape the same mindset of his friends. To me, he is at the height of immaturity when he is half in the bag and takes Uma Thurman to the ice shake in a thinly-veiled attempt to seduce her and his girlfriend is coming to town the very next day, lol. I had a bigger problem with that than the unique relationship with Marty personally speaking.

The ice skating scene is my favorite between Willie and Marty. As the scene progresses, Willie finally realizes that the feelings, both of them are experiencing can't continue. He tries to let her down gently without hurting her feelings. Marty was not expecting his reaction. We see how immature she really is. She feels hurt and confused and trying not to show it she skates away.
