Series 18

Hello everyone, I've heard some great things about series 18 this year, in particular 'Falling Angels'. As I've never seen an episode of Silent Witness, would I still be able to watch and follow this ok?

reply

Yes - I only started watching SW about two years ago and it's very easy to get into. New storylines every week, any over arching storylines that follow are easily followed.

Check it out, you wont be disappointed.

Thank you very much, will check it out ASAP!

I can't give you an answer about the episodes before Emilia Fox joined the show but everything after that has kept my interest (and I get bored easily!).

In particular, Falling Angels was the best Silent Witness 'story' I've seen in a while. It felt like it could've been a film. The actors playing Owen and Lana (and the young police inspector) blow everyone else out of the water, including Emilia Fox.I've watched it at least four times trying to work out and pick up all the nuances and they played the parts so well. Don't want to spoil it so will only say it had Greek Tragedy epicness!

Just watched the 2 Falling Angels episodes, absolutely fantastic. Gripping from start to finish. I'm going to watch Snipers Nest next and then carry on watching as normal on TV :-)

Glad you like it :)

Thanks! Just wish I started watching it a few years earlier...think I will go back and watch some if I can find them online/DVD.

It is a very good series but they aren't all as fantastic as Falling Angels. I was reading some director/writer notes about it somewhere on my travels around the internet and it seems they have ramped up their game for series 18. When they originally brought Jack into it a couple of years ago(the Irish guy) they were trying to make it feel less 'middle class/old school tie network' by introducing a working class guy who'd worked his backside off to get the job. He was/is very edgy compared to the characters which were with Emilia Fox before (again can't speak for the Amanda Burton years here). They are now bringing contemporary London into the mix which has worked fantastically well so far.
I really don't know how they are going to top Falling Angels. Not a word of a lie I've watched it about 6 times at least. The whole thing is a masterpiece in the midst of the ordinary (and I don't mean that in a pejorative sense) Silent Witness series of narratives. It could have been a stand alone drama(film!) by itself. When I was watching the first episode of the story arc I was a little confused because it was so different to anything they've done before and it didn't feel like Silent Witness. It all came together in the second one and I realised that the reason it felt odd was because it was just a blinding piece of drama, way,way above anything you'd normally expect.
Just about everything was spot on, the use of metaphorical and literal mirrors and reflection, the extreme opposites of the city, sweeping, lofty city scapes and the dirty, secret underground labyrinth of the tube system, numerology signifying transmutation, exceptional musical score (James Blakes Retrograde at the end of episode one for example, lots of meanings - degenerate person, going backwards, going downhill, to slide backwards etc) but the biggest kudos has to go to Leila Mimmack and in particular Jack Roth, playing Lana and Owen. I'm just in awe of it. They owned that story. They were blindingly good, they shone that bright, and I was rooting for them in spite of the path they had set themselves on. I actually felt ill when I realised what was going to happen because it was like I was watching a pair of real people. The real villain of the story is us - passing people by , not caring, not listening to those in need, not helping to develop sense of self worth ; so many people are lost, not just those on the streets and we ignore them with tragic consequences. Ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee....reflect on that society.

That said, it was an outstanding episode!

Can't believe I've never seen this show before.. I'll have to download Falling Angels asap.. You're not the only one here praising it.. The DC sniper -esque season opener wasn't bad, but it's the only one I've seen thus far so I'm not too emotionally invested in the main characters yet.. Quick question: Is each show 'ripped from the headlines' like Law and Order used to be?

The young police inspector is actor Richard Rankin. He was in The Crimson Field and is in The Syndicate 3 which comes out later this year. I was impressed with the Fallen Angels scripts; they added a twist I didn't expect!

reply

yes we are discussing the numerous merits of Richard Rankin here :)
