Thank god Amanda Burton left this show!

A slightly belated comment...

This really has developed into a cracking series now - Burton was so annoying, I'd actually had to stop watching while she was still in it. The parodies by Dead Ringers etc were spot on with her mannerisms, archness and overacting!

I am definitely watching next week's, i thought that i was going to be able to call it, but i was totally wrong, THE SHOW IS AMAZING!!!!

While I enjoyed it back when Amanda Burton was in, I think I prefer it now, not having a star character is an improvement.

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

I wholeheartedly agree. This show is one of the BBC's finest. The ensemble cast have great chemistry.

I'm an American who enjoyed this show hugely when I was in London a couple of years ago. Like virtually all British detective series and thrillers, hugely superior in every way to American shows. Am AMAZED that no episodes are available on DVD! (I liked Amanda Burton, however.) Would love to see this new version. Come on BBC...put out DVD's!

Silent Witness is one of my favorite shows. I loved it when Amanda Burton was on and I still love it now. When AB first left the show, I wasn't sure if I would still watch it but Nikki, Harry and Leo really grew on me. They are great characters and I like the contrast between Nikki and Sam Ryan. Sam was a strong, independent woman but while Nikki is also quite strong, she is completelty different to Sam. I also like the chemistry between Nikki, Harry and Leo. The best part about this show is that each episode focusses on MORE than one situation. I also like how the characters have to deal with personal issues aswell, its not just about the deaths that have taken place.

So while I liked Same Ryan, I really like Nikki, Harry and Leo. Its good having 3 main characters because more things can be added into the storyline in each episode. However, I really liked the way Sam Ryan mainly had to deal with situations on her own, even though she did have backup.

Silent Witness was really good after Amanda Burton left. For a while we were spared Sam Ryan's sanctimonious judgmentalism and crazy rashness. We were spared the stupidity of her inevitable confrontation with the villain at the end of each episode. Sadly, the writers could not leave well enough alone, and Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) has now transmogrified herself into a Sam Ryan clone. The show has gone back to being as irritating as it was when I first gave up watching it.

While the show was strong enough to survive Burton's departure, I wasn't glad to see AB go. I've always been an Amanda Burton fan, especially her work as a creepy stalker/revenge seeker in Forgotten. When will the whole series be available on DVD?

I enjoyed the stories in Silent Witness (especially the one about the men lost at sea from an oil rig) when Amanda Burton was boss and she made a good solo lead -- not an easy task, I think. I've only ever seen Amanda in one other role -- very good as a villainess in one of the Agatha Christie mysteries. Though it gave me an appreciation of her versatility, it also clued me in to the limitations of her face, which explained her almost everpresent simper/smirk as Sam Ryan.

I have just discovered this series--am an American and it has not been played on BBCAmerica as far as I know or Masterpiece which is usually how I get UK crime shows...
I saw the helicopter crash and AB's identification efforts of the recoverd crew--that was season 3 or 4--and thought it was excellent--
it was so great not to have the police made the bad guys--although the owner of the firm who pushed his pilot to incredible ends wasn't really held accountable at the end fo the story
VERY scary images of falling in a disentigrating helicopter--
I know someone whose husband works on ocean oil rig and who flies to the location and back--
very scary way to commute to work...

It's never had a good distribution in the U.S.--though back in the early days of the mid-90s with Amanda Burton when there were still good channels on U.S. cable like Bravo and A&E that showed hours of good British television (remember when Bravo was subscription and didn't show commercials? They used to show BBC shows in their entirety)--I saw SW with Amanda on US television.

BBC America now is nothing but a hideous junk factory of butchered down UK shows and the second rate stuff (with only a few exceptions).

Even if they DID show "Silent Witness" they'd have to cut 15 minutes out of each hour for the commercials to cut it from the original 59 BBC minutes.

Non starter on a crime show where every minute counts in the plot...

Not that it's stopped BBCA from butchering every BBC show they've ever shown. But something like Top Gear or other silly shows that haven't much plot or are not complex crime stories can take the 15 minutes cut out.

Others can't...

ITV shows fare better on BBCAmerica given they are already at 45 minutes due to it being a commercial station. But BBCA cuts 1-4 minutes out of those too.

BBC America is toxic. Avoid avoid. HA!!
