I know I've seen that very same scene before in something. The shooter climbs into the back of the car, into the boot and shoots through the removable badge. Can anyone remember where I saw it ?

That's what John Allen Muhammad did--he had a hole near the license plate and crawled into the trunk to put his gun barrel through the hole.
So it's made the rounds ever since in many TV shows that have used the DC sniper case for their remakes.
I've seen this in no fewer than a dozen tv shows and films since the DC sniper case.
It happened for real in the US. A deranged father and son duo in the Washington DC area murdered several random people firing sniper rifles from the trunk of a car about 10 years ago. I think they were called the "freeway killers."
