The 'infamous' Kelly Blue Book and the car scam (9-23)

Interesting scam going on between the 20 year old student and the car she bought from her cousin's boyfriend (who looked like a Jamie Foxx character from the 1990's show 'In Living Color').

Jamie Foxx bought the car in October, 2015 for an undetermined amount of money (he just dang! forgot) but he did remember he put $1500 down, and had monthly payments for about $250 and by February 2016 only owed one more payment.

So he sold the car to 20 year old, and sure enough - the car was repoed for being way behind in payments....not up to date at all.

He then recalled he bought the 2006 car for $10,000 though it had a Kelly Blue Book value for $7,000. So he had another few years of payments to make, since his $1500 down payment wasn't going to get him far.

Thought it was funny that Judge Judy asked Byrd to take out the 'infamous Kelly blue Book'. INFAMOUS? I'm sure the publisher of KBB cringed when she described it that way. 

I cringed too.

I was hoping Byrd would correct her like she does the plaintiffs:

"It's not infamous, it's famous. Infamous is when you're known for something negative or in a bad way." Then he rolls his eyes and shakes his head.

I was really confused about that line. Why did JJ refer to it as 'infamous.' She treats the book like the Bible and always agrees with values in there. This is the first time she showed disdain for it. What gives?

I don't know about JJ but there are some news sources and other things in print that I trust more than another source. My mother only trusted news papers such as The New York Times and even old copies of The Sun which she kept. It went out of print in the early 50s I think but she often quoted from it if talking about her childhood. Maybe Judge Judy has some attachment to the Blue Book.

I'm positive she meant famous, and uttered the wrong word. That's what happens when you have TOO much education - like 15 years of post grad school.

I'm surprised the sound editors didn't edit it out.

Ya something tells me you're right that she meant to say famous too. Lmfao! If you're sitting there relying something all the time and using it as gospel for everything, "infamous" is the last thing you refer to it as. It looks pretty bad to confuse a word with its opposite, especially when they sound so much alike and can be distinguished by either "un" or "in," as in "inoffensive" or "unreliable."

I think she knew what she said and was just trying to make a joke. It's infamous from some litigants' point of view though!

But even as a joke, does it make much sense?

reply

No, it doesn't.
