JJ finds KBB 'astonishing' but goes along with it? (11-18)

On today's show, there was a case which involved a 1983 Chevy Silverado. She asked Byrd to look up the value in the Kelly Blue Book, to which he told her it was valued at $8300. She asked him to check again, because the price seemed too high 'for a 24 year old car' (ummm, that would be 'nearly 34 year old car', but she doesn't make mistakes...does she?).

Again, he comes back with the same price, to which she has to look at it and respond "I find that astounding!" She then lets the litigants look at the price as well, since it was sold for about $1200.

So even though it seemed out-of-whack (and the most reliable sources make mistakes - especially books when they 'go to the printers' or an editor doesn't fact check) JJ goes with the value listed.

She doesn't toss the book aside and say 'That's a bunch of baloney - I'm not going by that', she doesn't call the publisher to verify, she doesn't check on a computer to compare to the other sites which offer car values....she goes by the KBB.

OUTRAGEOUS!

People complain when she doesn't go by the KBB, now they complain because she does.

JJ never goes by the KBB, even when she thinks that she does.

I bought and sold many cars; I had a little business on the side where I would buy damaged cars, fix them up and then sell them, so I know a thing or two about their prices. I don't know whether its a poor editing, but it annoys me a lot when somebody says "its a 2010 Ford F-150" and all of the sudden Byrd comes with the exact price. Well, the brand new F-150 can cost anywhere from $26,000 to almost $70,000, depending on a model and equipment. So its impossible to know the fair price based on "2010 Ford F-150" info alone.
Another thing is that KBB only suggests the price. I've bought and sold cars for thousands over and thousands under KBB suggested price. A used Honda or Toyota will always sell for much more than KBB suggests - and I'll sell it on the same day when the ad is posted. A used Dodge or Mitsubishi will sell for under KBB's suggestion - and it might take me months to do so.

Some cars simply have more demand and because of that their prices are higher than KBB suggests. There was a case a while go where JJ was shocked that somebody paid $22,000 for a 1993 Toyota Supra Turbo. Her logic was, "Couldn't you buy a new Corolla for that much?" So that clearly tells you that she (nor Byrd) doesn't know a thing about cars. Adjusting inflation, new Supra turbo was $80,000 and its a very rare car with a huge demand for it. I don't expect from JJ to know this, but Byrd has been feeding her wrong info for years and I guess she never questioned if he's telling the truth.

I think that somebody told JJ once, "KBB doesn't sell cars" and I used that logic many times when somebody wanted to buy a Honda or a Toyota for KBB's price. If they're being really pushy with whole "KBB said its worth this much", my response would be "Have KBB sell you a car for that much then, because I won't".

Wow. I wasn't doubting you, but I had to see for myself. I don't know a lot about cars. I just thought that such an old Toyota at such a high price was crazy, till I saw this... https://www.carsforsale.com/toyota-supra-for-sale-C648241

Yep, 1993-1998 Toyota Supra goes for crazy money. Especially a turbo model, they cost more now than they did when they were brand new (even adjusting inflation).

Another car that goes for crazy money is 2006-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I've seen 5 year old FJ Cruisers with 100,000 miles sell for 90% of the price when they were new. And that's another example that JJ wouldn't believe.

I didn't even watch that episode, but are you sure its a '83? I don't think that KBB even goes back that far.

'Twas. As a matter of fact when she told Byrd to look it up, she even said "I don't think it even goes back that far..." but then he opened it and said 'It does..'.

God knows what Byrd looked at ... Because Chevy didn't even make the Silverado in '83; Chevy's truck at that time was C/K, and Silverado replaced it in '98.

Yes, 100% sure.
Silverado was a trim level on C/K back then, just like LTZ or High Country are now. Although some people do advertise them as Chevy Silverado, KBB would use the official factory name, which is Chevy C/K.

Yes, in fact the KBB referred to the "Silverado Package" rather than just the "Silverado". It was obvious that what KBB is reporting on is the relative value of the base truck sporting the premium "Silverado Package". I spotted that right away, when Byrd went to the book.
