At least a couple of times a week people walk up to JJ and try to give her their evidence and Byrd says, "Hey, get back." Why don't they know the procedure by now? This show has been on for twenty years. If they were going to be on a show you would think they would watch a least a couple of episodes and know better.
I actually find this statement hard to believe [not that you are lying].
if these schlubs actually watched the show they would take notice that she dislikes bullchit. she despises trash people who want things they can't afford/ are able bodied on the dole/ don't raise their children as best they can.
People are willing to risk it for the money. I have heard people even joke about making up a fake case just to get money out of Judy, that any yelling she did would be worth it. Let's be honest. With all the litigants JJ yells at, its not like any one in particular will suffer serious public humiliation unless it attracts great attention through social media like the Tupperware lady, Kelly Filkins, or the two kids who stole the wallet and admitted to it, etc. Those people just ruined their reputations as their cases attract more attention than most, but 90% of the cases won't. So the question becomes, is the money worth a few second of public humiliation that chances are will be forgotten the next day after the airing?
You totally read my mind..... I've wondered that exact thing since the show started in Sept/1996 - no matter whether Byrd is handing the paperwork to JJ, or getting it from the litigants, he NEVER looks at that person, it has been almost TWENTY YEARS that this has been quietly annoying me!! I'm glad to know someone else is as perceptive as I've been, Mike
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot - than to open it and remove all doubt!
I beg to differ, rdpepper210......Douglas, the Bailiff on The Peoples Court, makes eye contact with everyone - litigants, witnesses, and most importantly, Judge Marilyn Milian herself. He (and Byrd) actually behave like actual Bailiffs, whereas the clown on Judge Mathis acts more like a cheerleader - at the end of each case, he's applauding louder and harder than the "audience", and litigants are. Judge's Judy and Marilyn do not encourage a sense of "courtroom participation" that idiot (imo) Judge Mathis does - his show is comical, the ladies have a far more dignified approach to their shows.

I am just taking a shot in the dark here, but I went to the Judge Judy program back in November of 2007. Recently, I actually saw the episodes I was on over YouTube. I was about to direct you all to them here on IMDB until I saw how ridiculous I looked. I have to wonder if I knew I might possibly be up in front of 10 million people looking that hideous, so I opted out of sharing the video here. But getting back to my point, I have one guess why Byrd might avoid eye contact:
Between cases, Byrd is actually very sociable and friendly with everyone in the courtroom. He even came over to me and the girl next to me and was joking it up with us. Now imagine, after joking and chatting it up with someone in a festive matter that they were then being embarrassed in front of 10 million people mere seconds later and you would be profiting off their embarrassment. LMFAO!!! Where would you be looking at? You can't look at the litigant and smile because you're to be on Judy's side and you can't look at Judy and smile because you were just chatting it up all friendly-like with the litigants. Best option: look the hell away so you don't have to look like traitor to anyone and can get home with that million bucks at the end of the day.

Thanks so much for the explanation, Tatmanlulu_BACK, that makes perfect sense. But inquiring minds want to know.........were you the Plaintiff or the Defendant, and did you wind up on the Plus or Minus side of the case?

You're welcome! I was the defendant and let me tell you... Judge Judy REEEEEEEEEEEEEEAMED my ass OUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT like she ain't nevu reeeeeeeeamed somebody out before. she left me in a pool of my own blood in that courtroom. And when I went home in tears, not even the towels could get them out. LOL! No j/k! Sorry for the confusion. I was neither plaintiff nor the defendant. I was just an audience member, but they sat me in the front row so you could see my face whenever they panned over to the witness. In one particular case they were panning over to the witness a lot I think just because I was making a lot of facial expressions. LMFAO!!! I've always been a huge fan of Judge Judy so it was amazing to get to go there. Byrd let me take pictures with her in the back. I've told this story here on IMDB 100 times but Judge Judy looked slightly irritated with Byrd that he brought me back. In the end because I was such a huge fan, you could tell how elated and appreciative she was.
PS don't take my theory as gospel because there's one hole in it. Byrd is out in the courtroom being friendly and affable with the audience members. The litigants aren't out there yet. My theory is that perhaps Byrd meets with the litigants upon arriving before all of the cases and they may whoop it up together. But yea, there's no way for him to whoop it up with litigants since they aren't in the courtroom yet in between cases, so my theory has holes in it. I am really confused as to why Byrd looks away.

I say that all the time. If I was going to be on a show, even if I had never seen it I would watch it a few times to see what it was like. I never get those people either.
