Looking at this board I can't believe that there's people who like the idea of Arnold and Helga. I always thought that *beep* was creepy as hell. She was psycho and completely obsessed with him. That whole shrine she had of him was just nuts. She stalked him for Christs sake. I thought Helga was sick and twisted, and she disgusted me.

shareYes I agree Helga was obsessed and took it too far with the shrines. But she's nine! When I was that age I use to call a guy I liked just to hear his voice and then hang up (this was before caller id), I never stalked anyone though or built shrines, but I did write obsessively in a diary. I think people forget how young these kids are even though they (Helga included) show a lot of maturity and independence, the fact is they are still developing.
Plus I've grown to understand why Helga was obsessed, he was the only person she thought genuinely cared for her (and Phoebe), he continued to be nice and give her advice despite her meanness that said a lot about Arnold. . Helga definitely needed to continue to see that child psychiatrist because I think that in some way her obsession with Arnold was a way to get her mind off of her dysfunctional family. Arnold was a positive light in her life.
Don't get me wrong Helga needed to learn that stalking was wrong, but I think by 5th grade (w/ the help of the psychiatrist) she would have stopped and would begin to build a life for herself outside of Arnold. At that point, Helga and Arnold will develop a real strong friendship and later on it could turn into something more.
Let's not forget that how Arnold had a slight tendency to obsessed over a girl he liked, not to the extent that Helga took it, but still.

That is true about Arnold remember when he was crushing on was it Rhonda or that one girl at the carnival.

Arnold had a crush on Lila (UGH) and Ruth not Rhonda. He was obsessing a little bit over Ruth, who he knew nothing about.

I'm pretty sure it was just an exaggeration of the obsession little girls can have, for humor's sake. It reminds me of when I was a girl obsessing over a crush, only with Helga it's exaggerated at least 10-fold hahaha.
