Why does no one ship Arnold + Lila?

That moment when she finally liked him liked him would have been just as magic as Helga's confession, if not more so.

...really?

Lila was just an irritating tease to Arnold (I felt bad for him being played by her). That whole "like you but not like you like you" thing ticked me off.

Rewatching episodes now, I'm just annoyed at her character.

nobody really likes lila. I liked her when all her and her dad had to eat was beans. but I don't like the way they wrote her towards Arnold

Unlikely, considering how long Helga had harboured her feelings for Arnold and how much deeper they were. Arnold was Helga's one ray of light. In fact, the most magical moment in that episode with Lila, was when Helga asked him if he was okay and put her hand on his shoulder. For a few seconds she let her guard down and we saw just how much she cared about him Frankly, I'd have been devastated to see Helga go through that pain of seeing him get with Lila.

What episode was that?

Arnold and Lila.

I love Lila as a character; I really don't understand the pure hatred fans get over her. It's a case of pitting Helga against the competition, which is, in this case, Lila. That can be one answer to your question, and it seems to be the most popular here.

As for me, the coupling isn't as strong, and it really feels like a kiddie crush on Arnold's part. Lila, too, has been so adamant and knows her feelings of not wanting to be with Arnold that I just personally didn't like the idea that she should like him just because he liked her. It's not like Helga case where she covers up a lot of who she is, personality wise, to hide her feelings; Lila knows the person Arnold is and still doesn't like him. That said, I wouldn't fault someone for liking them together, but I'm just too much of a Helga/Arnold shipper to think otherwise. In the grand scheme of things, Helga and Arnold make sense. Lila and Arnold don't.

reply

Yup, agreed. No one ships Arnold with Lila because she's the competition for Helga.

Not that Lila was a bad character or anything. I never disliked her. There was no real reason to dislike her and Helga is actually probably a lot more unlikable. It just comes down to who's more relatable, which Helga was.

They also might have made a good pairing, but they were just too similar, too 'perfect', a. k. a. boring.

I think there was also a lack of someone else to ship Helga with, because as deuteragonist Helga couldn't have been left unpaired.

Arnold and Gerald are clearly the best ones, but Gerald and Phoebe obviously liked each other (so no one shipped Gerald with Helga). Maybe Park, Iggy or Peapod, but neither of them gets enough screentime (and Peapod actually had a crush on Nadine).

Because I once heard someone say (maybe even on this message board) that Arnold was just a crutch for Helga, something to hold on to when things got bad for her. And that's absolutely right. Not that they wouldn't have made a good couple after clearing all the mess out. I mean, I'm gonna ship it even after my corpse is rotting six feet under, but let's call a spade a spade.

Yes, I couldn't agree more. That's a perfect description. Arnold gives complete meaning to Helga's life and he is what keeps her going.

"Arnold, my love, why must I worship you...and NEVER EVER tell?" 

reply

Lila was never developed much as a character, so it's not like anyone would have a reason to care about an Arnold + Lila pairing.

reply

Why ship a losing team? I mean it's pretty clear that Arnold/Helga is Craig Bartlett's OTP he is always gushing over her and she is like the most developed character in the show.

RIP Cory Monteith your fans miss you dearly
