Was There Ever An Episode Where Marie Decided With Robert Against Ray?

Besides the one where Ray told Robert to get a life?

I Went With Mom-Tim McGee

In season 1, she yells at Ray for taking Robert's position as the captain on Nemo's Pizza League.

She got mad and scolded Ray when he gave Robert a lame bachelor party.

Off the top of my head.

I remember when Ray asked his mother if she would call him (Ray) in an emergency and I believe she said she would turn to Robert first, then Frank.

Yeah. I loved that scene. Marie talks about how reliable and strong Robert is.

But it was funny when Ray asks if she'd want him, and she asks him if other people are around. Ray says no. Then she pauses and asks "Is your father available?"

On an off-topic, I loved Frank in the episode. He arms wrestles Ray and beats him. Then Ray wants another match.

Ray "Come on, one more time" (hits his elbow on table) Ow, ow. Funny bone! (jumps up holding his elbow)
Marie "Oh! Frank see what you did?! He's hurt!"
Frank "And i'll take his sandwich too!" (grabs Ray's lunch and eats it)

I always felt this scene showed the basis of their relationship. Although it appeared that throughout their lives, Marie favored Ray over Robert, I always thought she was overprotective of him because her real opinion was that he was the weaker introvert of the two boys. Robert was the stronger, handsome, more capable child that did not need a lot of guidance or mothering. Marie saw that little Ray was picked on, held back a grade, and appeared to need her more. This scene, among others, brought their real relationship to light, IMO.

Excellent analysis.

I never thought of it in that way.

But that makes perfect sense.

Yeah, I can see how some have that interpretation. But I can't say I agree given how negligent Marie is of Robert.

Such as saying she gives bad food to him that's not good enough for Ray.

Calling to talk to Ray. She asks if Frank is there. Robert tells Ray to let her know he's there too, and Marie wonders why Ray told her that.

Throwing away Robert's stuff, but hanging on to Ray's.

When Ray was born, Marie would feed him and gush, meanwhile, she didn't even know where Robert was.

Then there was her telling Robert to get his ass out of her house if he wasn't going to have kids.

She says outright she just paid more attention to Ray because "he was a needy, soft, weak, little boy." Then goes on to say Robert was the strong one, and the favorite one. But Ray, Debra, Robert, and Amy all felt she was lying there. But it's in the air from fandom to interpret if it was true or not. I always saw that as a lie to build Robert up because she wanted him to hurry and have kids. In the same episode, she's spoiling Robert and pampering him and Amy to try and get grandkids.

Well, Marie may have thought that Ray needed more "mothering". For all of the reasons explained above.

And then, in a warped way, that (Ray's "need" for more mothering) fed into Marie's ego. She now felt "needed" and "important". Which she probably never felt with Frank or with Robert.

And then that view took on a life of its own.

And she let it grow out of hand. To feed her ego. To help herself feel important.

It probably started out innocent or innocuous enough. And with the best of intentions.

But then it spiraled and took on a life of its own.

And, in the sit-com world, all things get exaggerated for humorous effect.

None that I can think of off the top of my head

In Traffic School, Season 2, Marie scolds Raymond on how he treats Robert.

Marie to Raymond: "What did you do? ...It breaks my heart the way you treat your brother."

reply

I forgot about that one
