Would you consider Marie to be toxic?

If anything, the character seems to be up to her neck in emotional manipulation. Using similar tactics that you'd see in toxic relationships.

Thoughts?

They bought a house.

reply

No. I consider her to be DEAD. Because the actress who played her has passed away. So what her character did no longer matters. And that's all there is to it!

Actually, the exact opposite is true.

Despite the fact that the actress has passed away, the character and the show will live on forever.

Thnk you for replying succinctly why IMDB remains an absolute cesspool.

I don't see how anyone could not consider her toxic. She's a psychopath and a narcissist.

That's an odd thing to say.

The character was very manipulative, gave out guilt like no tomorrow. Also her back handed compliments and her way was always right. Know people like her. However, it was entertaining and still is. I'm watching all episodes again.

Yes, she is toxic. She always criticized Debra or made backhanded "compliments" about her housekeeping, cooking and parenting skills and decisions. She was always over at their house getting in their way or in their marriage/parenting situations and she expected Ray to choose his mother in every situation instead of his own wife.

Very toxic.

Marie's behavior in Favors (Season 9) was highly toxic. She does "favors" for all the family members as a way to manipulate them down the road.

reply

I loved Amy's response to Marie saying that it was merely what goes on in families. "Yeah, a Mafia family!"  It was completely right.

reply

That was so funny, but Marie is able to completely shut her down.

reply

I think she was at her "most evil" in "Thank You Notes". That end scene showed just how an evil witch she was.

Yes. Yes. And...... oh yeah, YES.

Frank would be infinitely more tolerable; at least you could shut him up once in a while. Marie is endless, and always all up in everybody's business.

She is a vicious hate filled monster. I could not watch the show because I despised her character so much. I watched a few episodes in syndication after a friend kept insisting it was hilarious. Most of the characters are insufferable douchebags but Marie is pure evil. After I watched the ep where the older brother BEGGED the loathsome witch to let him fulfill his dream of joining the FBI and the hateful shrew instead sh!t on his dreams and made sure he could never join I couldn't watch it anymore.

I feel sorry for anyone who had to grow up with a mom like her.
