Obsessions

Frank had an obsession with food. Ray with sex. Robert who trying to be better than Ray and fight for Marie's attention. Marie with Ray and always picking on Debra.

I would say Marie's "obsession" is cleaning. We see how neurotic she is to dirt and things not being just right. Like when she panics that Debra bleached her yellow towels because not that don't match the yellow theme of her bathroom. There's an episode in season 5, I think it's called Human Vac where Debra points out that she's obsessed and spends more time sterilizing her family than enjoying them.

I don't know who the bigger neat-freak is. Marie Barone. Danny Tanner. Or Monica Geller.

Debra was the only one who didn't seem to have an obsession, no?

reply

I would say finally beating, or "overthrowing" Marie would be her's. Like her attempts to try cutting Marie out, getting outside help so they don't need her as much. Trying to bring new women into the family to team up against her. Like the entire episode where Amy and Robert come home from their honeymoon.

So I could put that for Debra.

Or Marie's obsessions for having more grandkids

reply

Marie's obsession is to be needed above everyone else. She needs to be the center of her family's universe.

You could say that almost all of the Seven Deadly Sins are covered by all the main characters:

Ray--sloth and lust

Frank--sloth and gluttony

Debra--wrath

Robert--envy

Marie--pride, AND THEN SOME!

I guess no one's guilty of greed.

I guess no one's guilty of greed.

Ray tends to "want to have it all".

Ray tends to "want to have it all".
Are you sure you're not talking about Robert, and how envious he is that Ray seemingly "has it all"?

reply

I think Ray wants to have it all. And, indeed, does have it all.

Robert is jealous that Ray has good fortune in life.

I don't think that Robert wants to have it all. (In other words, he'd be quite content with a simple life.)

He just gets angry and upset that Ray has it all.

Robert thinks that Ray stumbles ass-backwards into everything. Robert does not think that Ray works hard and earns what he has. He just stumbled into it and lucked into it.

I agree with you - and how Ray wants to be beloved by all, including his kids and wife, without giving much time or attention to anyone in order to deserve it; it's kind of greedy on the lines of selfish. Robert gives to many people in his life, including sis-in-law and niece/nephews, and just wants a few simple life pleasures if he could be lucky enough (and wouldnt take them for granted).

Have been watching and loving this show recently. Agree with this great analysis.
