Was I dreaming???

I'm almost certain that when this show launched, Phylicia Rashad was not in the first few episodes as Ruth Lucas. I thought it was another actress.

Am I correct? And if so - who was she?

You were not correct. Telma Hopkins was originally cast as Ruth, but she was never in any of the episodes.
