When the Show went down hill...

Anyone else think the show went down hill as they became more human? ironic really. First 3 seasons were funny as hell. Only real thing that saved the show that made it last as long as it did was was John Lithgow, what you guys think?

reply

Well I think the show remained pretty funny throughout but yes it was at it's strongest during season 2 and 3....2 being my personal favourite. I think the show left off at a pretty good time because by the last season the writing was still pretty sharp but they realised that the idea had a limited shelf life and if they continued for longer then I think the show might have fallen apart like so many others. I think it had a pretty strong run.

reply

I love the show.
Having said that, in the last couple of seasons, the whole theme of aliens trying to live normal human lives sort of started to run its course.
They tried other ideas, some of which ended up being very funny....but it became old news.
Still, a very successful sitcom, outlasted many of its peers.
I still laugh hard every time I see an episode.

reply

The show jumped the shark? Never! It was a good show throughout.

reply

I never said it jumped the shark. I love the show, but when it ended, it was time.

reply

Agreed I highly enjoyed the show from start to finish but I'm not entirely sure if the show had another solid season in it.....given then nature of the show it was lucky it stayed strong for 6 seasons anyway. I was happy it ended when it did because it ended on a high which more shows should do.

reply

Season 6 was not the best in my eyes it had a few good episodes but it was not the same as previous seasons.

reply

While the show was at its high when it ended, I would have liked to have heard of Mary's musings with the group.

reply

I personally think it started going downhill when the big giant head was seen and the whole alternate universe episode, while funny, was too much of a stretch even for this show

reply

The 5th season, with its new 'hip' theme and ongoing love affair with tired show tunes, just targetted the over 50s demographic a tad too aggressively.

reply

I'm on 6 now and it is not even close to the others

No offense, but you're an idiot.

reply

yah i agree with the OP completely.

The show was amazing for the first 3 seasons as the gang was still learning so much and so much was still so new. After they basically had all their bearings, it became more of doing things wrong rather than misunderstanding what to do and what was happening.

It was still really funny in the last few seasons, but i agree that the alien's mistakes were more akin to them being ignorant/rude rather than being clueless. Their ignorance still stemmed from them being aliens and not fully understanding social/legal rules/laws.

I felt like the characters came off more as jerks rather than clueless who still mean well (but just dont know how to). I felt like it was because i felt like the gang knew the rules they were breaking/misunderstanding and were ignoring them because of their alien attitudes (being superior, not agreeing with the rule, etc.) rather than not knowing about them.

I completely agree with Slainmonkey

I disagree, slightly. The show was funny as hell in Season 5. The best being seasons 3 & 5. It went downhill when Tommy went to college. I didn't like season 6, his energy was off.

Tommy's noticeable absence really killed season 6 for me. I do think it started to go downhill when they changed the theme song and got rid of the little end scene after each episode. The energy changed. It was still good though, just not as good.

reply

Season 5 got really really preachy.

reply

Well I still think the show was quite fun, but I think I like the earlier Seasons better.

I agree, something happened between season 3 and season 4, as the quality went downhill quickly. Often with successful shows, people want to hire the writers away to start new series. I wonder if this was the case.

reply

IMHO compared to the absolute crap that the networks are pushing out these days - 3rd Rock was great from beginning to end... even their so-called "weak" episodes were better than today's garbage. Have been watching the show again on HULU and am getting even more of an appreciation for this incredibly funny funny, well-written show.

reply

I think the show never was as great as it could have been. There was potential for more.

But it was okay throughout.

While I agree that the first 3 seasons are the freshest, they're are some great eps in seasons 4-6 but it became much more hit or miss
