Dick's little trick seemed just that a trick. It seems like it was something he saw on TV and believed it worked. Plus everyone else would still remember them so what would be the point of erasing Mary's memory? Honestly I didn't much care for Mary but I would've rather she had gone with them.

I gather that her memory wasn't completely erased, just the important stuff. After all, she still remembered her feelings.
