They needed to be likable and they are just so annoying.

Kevin Costner is just being Kevin Costner. Dennis Hopper is fun.

What was the problem with the movie?

It only flopped because the press , before it was released and nobody had actually seen it , told everyone "Oh its no good because its overbudget and behind schedule"

which to me sound like positive plus points!

Funny, because it is the only one movie where I can stand Jeanne Tripplehorn for more than just a few seconds.
And Tina Majorino seemed to be a promising child actor. Definitely less annoying than Dakota Fanning in War of the Worlds...

Child star Dakota Fanning was annoying because they wrote those midget-adult precocious roles for her. As an adult she isn't annoying, so she isn't actually inherently irritating.
