Looks Way Older Than It Is

I just watched this movie, and if I didn't check the (1995) date on the TV Guide, I would've thought this was a 70's or 80's movie. The picture quality, score, and filming style just didn't seem like it could have been made so recently. Anyone else feel this way?

reply

Yeah I definitely felt that way. I actually am watching it now on Scifi and had to come on here and check the date it was made. However it still doesn't change the movie at all. I really like the movie even with the "old' feel to it!

reply

I watched it last night on scifi too. First time I ever heard of it to be honest.

I was surprised it was made in 1995 as well.

reply

Agree...take away the "freaky eye iris effect" and this movie has 1982 written all over it.

It just looked done very much "on the cheap."

reply

Yeah the score is very old-ish, but it's cool. To be honest I haven't even seen this movie. I just walked in on my dad watching it and I just saw two different parts. It seems really cool though.

reply

It's an 80's classic, that just happened to have been made in 1995.

reply

The story was set in 1957 in England. To have made it too modern would have destroyed the story completely. But this was a better version than the 1960 one.

reply

It is too modern in the film ;( Actually it has almost nothing to do with the book, and that disappointed me .

reply

I actually seen this in the theater in 1995 and it actually looked real "old" then too. It really looked cheap but I think Carpenter was trying for that feel, not sure. I liked the movie, wasn't the greatest but it had it's moments.

reply

I'm pretty sure that was the whole intention. It gives off a very old feel to it, almost like a black and white film. The music also doesn't seem too modern, if you ask me. It's all to add to the style.

reply

I think Carpenter made it that way on purpose. He wanted to give it an 80's horror movie feel.

reply

I feel the same way, person who will never see this comment. Carpenter was a huge fan of 40’s and 50’s cinema, and of all his films this feels the most like a movie from that time period. However, it still feels very much like John Carpenter.

reply

I watched it yesterday and was thinking the exact same thing. It has the look and feel of a late 70s/early 80s movie.

What are words for when no one listens anymore

reply

Early 80's? I just don't see that. It looked early 90's at best.

reply

No, it looked VERY 1995 to me...... the 1990's wasn't that far off from the 80's anyways. This wasn't a movie made in the 21st century, this is older pre digital filmmaking..... the 90's was still pretty old school.

reply

I thought I was the only one who thought that thing. I was surprised it was filmed in 1994.

reply

I don't think so, it's certainly looks like it was made in the 90s. The time period within the movie, it's probably supposed to a little ambigous. The story takes place over the course of 10-12 years, so they dont really give us any indication of what year its supposed to be at any given time. Even when they show Christophers Reeves Wife grave, there is no birth or death date on it.
