Were the filmakers big fans of Planes Trains and Automobiles or what?
Not only is the film a dumbed down version of it but the credits used in Tommy Boy are the exact same font as those used in PT&A.
Love the movie though!

it's playing on tv over here and i was thinking the exact same thing. the motel...the car...singing in the car

Hmm, I wonder about that. Planes was a much better movie. I also like that film because my cousin Ira Newborn did the score on that film. He actually worked with Peter Segal and Robert Weiss on the third Naked Gun film too.
sharefunny is funny, though.
planes trains and automobiles is: skinny guy, fat guy. straight guy vs. bumbling nincompoop. laurel and hardy, abbott and costello.....moe and curly.
Curly is funny EVERYTIME, and so is CHRIS FARLEY...
he really is. what other Saturday night live character is funny every time???
when i watch Tommy Boy i thougth about planes trains and automobiles, but also Blues Brothers: Scenes in the car, singing, trying to raise money for a cause, road trip, bad guys out to stop em......
It's a formula that has worked for decades: the "buddy film".
Funny, I can't think of a lot of equivalent scenarios that involve women (a "sistah film"?)
Except "Thelma & Louise". And that didn't end too good for the gals.
Cool!
shareI worked on Tommy Boy and can attest that director Pete Segal had a tape of Planes, Trains & Automobiles in his office and trailer which he would refer to during filming.
shareYeah, the PT&A resemblance is pretty hard to miss, but (to me, at least) the film doesn't suffer for it. It's just as entertaining and funny.
------Jesus loves you, but only as a friend.------
Planes,Trains and Automobiles was a better movie and a big influence but TommyBoy was still pretty good.

I never got that analogy, because the characters in planes, Tranes, and Automobiles didn't owe each other anything, and neither was supposed to be going the same location, and Steve Martin was really pissed off, not just mildly annoyed or somewhat entertained by John Candy. Also John Candy and Steve Martin weren't ridiculous. Tommy Boy had lots of whimsy. I think both were great films. I'll have to watch them again.
Yeah I concluded the same thing as I watched them driving down the road, with the screw-ups. I mean, the shot where they almost hit the oncoming truck because they were going the wrong way ---- duh??
And the whole deer thing looks like a metaphor for when Steve Martin & John Candy set their car on fire and then have to drive it after. Two wrecked cars driving down the highway.
In the Midwest, no less.
When the car was wrecked, I was reminded of Planes Trains and Automobiles but they aren't exactly the same.
In one case, it is destroyed by fire and bad driving.
In the other, a deer destroys it plus Chris is an idiot and damages the left side door and also doesn't properly close the hood.
As for the singing in the car, I suppose you could make a weak link there as well.
yes, this made me think of "planes, trains & automobiles" as well while watching the whole wrecked car bit 🚗 it's so weird how rob lowe appears uncredited yet playing such a major part, really a lot of topics on this board revolve around that as well, you know what else is weird, how many comedies rob lowe has been in, always playing a dick, while the humour is left to other actors, he does make a funny scene in this though as he takes a leak on the electric fence, the kid with the tiny head comment was fun too, well a lot of funny moments, i agree, chris farley is funny every time, i have resisted watching "almost heroes" though after seeing the trailer... there is a lot of music in this movie, notice all the strings and background music, it gets exaggerated i feel, and notice when spade's hair blows off next second it's perfectly made up again. a lot of the jokes are so simple i wonder how they would have gone down if not chris farley performing it, really one of the funniest people ever, much is physical stuff. i just thought of something, john belushi was chris farley's great hero, here farley appears with belushi's movie team buddy dan aykroyd.
