Is this the movie with...

A teenaged boy with red hair is a super-smart geek and has a romance with the ship's computer AI voiced by a woman? There's also these devices when thrown they leave a disintegrated hole that if you step in/on you're dead, or something like that. Other memories I have of the movie are all the people who go on the voyage, in the beginning of the movie, make calls to their loved ones and say goodbye. I also remember the red-haired smart kid taking notes in his head, impressing some one else. If this isn't that movie, does anyone know the movie I'm talking about? It's been driving me crazy for years and I have no been able to figure out what it is. The movie I'm thinking about I thought was before 1994, but this sounds like a close description in some ways, and the closest I can remember to a title is "earth star voyager", which doesn't result in any searches but this is close to that. PLEASE HELP!
