The Library scene

Such a great scene - the Bach music, the dark stacks, the horrific manuscript drawings of hell and anguish juxtaposed with the crime scene photos. So much atmosphere, suspense.

A masterpiece inside a masterpiece.

So elevated...

It is, in a good way. The allusions to classical literature and music give the movie elegance and gravity. John Doe isn’t pulling his philosophy out of his own butthole, he’s basing his sick deeds on ancient ideas that formed Western Civilisation.

Se7en transcends being a genre film and becomes art because it comments on our spiritually dead world, and leaves us with awkward questions to chew on, like ‘does Doe have a point?’
