Lucifer's telling Katherine that Gabriel's methods would create a new Heaven that would be a second Hell - a rival to his - but that he could instead save Mary and "open up Heaven again?" Why would he want this? To spite Gabriel, even if it means humans can again ascend to Heaven?

He was just trying to manipulate Katherine into helping him.
He knew which souls would go to Heaven, and which ones would go to Hell with him.
It was a way to get Katherine to help him, therefore using her free will to do so.

shareI think Lucifer didn't want Gabriel to open another Hell, which is what would have happened if Gabriel succeeded. God would probably treat Gabriel like he treated Lucifer and would give him his own SEPARATE hell......I think.
Lucifer wanted only one Hell.....the one he is in charge of.
