A decision maker would have to be smart enough to make the choices with the most favourable outcome, in this case save the monkey which is within his control rather than face the pilots which had a less certain outcome. Thus a rationale decision would have been to save the host monkey.

These script writers and producers were paid a lot of money. They should have paid attention to details. They do not deserve the nomination for the Best Science Fiction Film.
