Was it more common in the 70s for kids to smoke

In this film, than man offers those girls cigarette and they just take it without hesitation like it was a piece of candy.

Was smoking more acceptable and common for kids back then?

The girls took the cigarettes because they were offered to them by a young(yet older and wiser in their eyes), attractive war vet and they wanted to appear more mature. As we see in the film, the only one who seems somewhat used to smoking is Roberta. Teeny and Sam...not so much. "Smooth". Chrissy of course, wasn't into it-"Smoking stunts your growth" ;) https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/d3/65/0d/d3650d71fd5aba36b61d3d18409cf4ec.jpg
