Whoever cast Rosie is a DISGRACE

It makes me sick that someone thought someone as heinous as Rosie would be the adult counterpart of the beautiful Christina Ricci. Seriously, for shame!!!

reply

Yeah that was really stupid casting - they probably cast her because she was a big name at the time without bothering to think about if she was right for the character

reply

The only thing more amusing than the endless attempts to insist Rosie O'Donnell is completely miscast as a strong, rather butch female who offends conservatives with her outspokenness and refusal to conform to gender stereotypes is the inability of so many people who profess to be fans of the movie to understand or deserve its message: "But can't we just get rid of all this silliness about empowerment and sisterhood and make it all about being pretty and marrying the cute boy? That's all that REALLY matters!"

reply

Yeah that's it, we all think Rosie as miscast because we're all evil conservatives nothing to do with her crappy phoned in performance and the fact she was playing herself rather than the character, everyone who disagrees with your point of view (even over trivial stuff like this) is a just massive sexist bigot? Sure....
Nobody in this thread even mentioned getting married to a cute boy and the only reason people mentioned pretty is because Christina is pretty and one of Roberta's main traits was being an active/sporty girl (I was also kinda sporty so I liked that about her when I was younger ) you just wouldn't expect her to turn into Rosie O'Donnell after 20 years - it would be like if an older Version of River Pheonix from Stand by me was inexplicably played by Chris Farley or John Goodman

reply

Yes, yes, of COURSE. We're supposed to ignore the incessant whining about Rosie being "fat" and "ugly" and therefore unworthy of being Roberta, we're supposed to ignore the endless litany of posts and threads about how Roberta should have been played by a conventionally pretty actress and shown to have married Scott, we're supposed to ignore the fact they ONLY complain about Rosie being miscast (Chrissy is played as a chubby girl --The actress was required to gain weight as a girl-- and rail-thin as an adult; by your logic, doesn't that mean SHE'S miscast too?), we're supposed to ignore Adult Roberta, as played by Rosie, is the most sensible, down-to-Earth, and grounded person in the entire film, all of which is serenely disregarded because she isn't 'pretty' and married to the cute guy and that the movie is therefore "wrong"...

Incidentally, it's worth noting the aforementioned "cute guy", Devon Sawa, gained quite a bit of weight when he grew up despite being interested in sports, and subsequently had to work hard at slimming back down. When you get older, your metabolism changes. It isn't as easy to live on junk food and burn off calories. So yes, 'thin' Roberta could have easily grown up to be 'fat' Rosie... Though of course people find this horrifying because it would mean pretty girls don't stay pretty forever...

Yes you can ignore it if it upsets you so much, why not? they're called opinions, those posters have every right to voice them on a movie message board where every thread/post is an opinion on the movie and its characters, It must be a widely held thought if there are so many posts about it - do you want IMDb to delete the posts or something?

Viewers were obviously invested in Roberta's character and relationship with Scott and wanted to see them together at the end - there's nothing at all wrong with that, it doesn't = sexism or any other -ism, they also thought Rosie's performance was sub-par (a point you won't address - she was crap) and that Rosie O'Donnell was miscast because of her looks/inability to evoke the character she was supposed to be playing - so what?
No I don't Rita Wilson was miscast I thought she captured Chrissy's character pretty well (and if she were chubby I'd think the same - Young Chrissy's wasn't exactly huge anyway)

Nobody said it was horrifying, they just said it didn't fit the character, maybe they thought Roberta wasnt the type to eat junk food and give up sports, everybody has their own read on the character and since she fictional no one is 'wrong'

Rick and Rosie look like each other

Agreed. It's a ridiculous casting choice. There is no way in hell that I buy Christina Ricci growing up to be Rosie O'Donnell. Roberta was tiny, athletic, feisty and attractive and yet she somehow turns into a kooky, overweight, butch "lesbian" in the future...Bullsh*t!!!! It has nothing to do with being "shallow" as some posters are claiming. [eye-roll] It's about the looks and personality of the character not matching up throughout the film. It takes you out of it when you think that it's supposed to be the same person. I still like the movie but Come on now. http://67.media.tumblr.com/8d197fecdee629deb4582f6b514ddbf5/tumblr_ntx0dwmtkn1qzg3f8o4_500.gif

Yeah, well I get claustrophobic sucking strange dick!

i somewhat agree with you on this one. always thought rosie was kind of "not right" to play adult roberta. has nothing to do with rosie...she just didn't fit the part. still love the movie, though.

It's horrifying to think young Christina grows up to be ugly Rosie O Donnel. And this is from somebody who thought she was adorable in The Flinstones.

1. BVS 2. TWS 3. Avengers

exactly! she was perfect as betty :)

We didn't know Rosie O'Donnell in the 1990s like we do nowadays. This was before "The View" when she would be on our television sets daily yakking away about certain subjects.

Do I think she was a miscast? Definitely. I always thought the adult Chrissy character was being portrayed by Rosie. She kinda has some sort of resemblance due to the fact that she was a little chubby.

But, I suppose it makes sense. Chrissy herself lost the weight. Roberta seems like somebody who became bitter and consumed a lot of food to cope with life. My aunt that did the same when my grandmother passed away years ago.

I was a young kid when i saw this and totally free of any sort of anti Rosie bias and even then I found there to be something very wrong ,off, and bordering on offensive about her playing an adult Christina Ricci.

reply

I can't understand why ANY of them agreed to be cast. What worthless roles the adults had.
