what exactly were the people trying to do? who was that gregg guy, is it someone she knew? whenever she called cathedral she always talked to some guy. she called one day and he no longer worked there, what happened to him? why did that senator kill himself in the beginning? why did it come out and say he had HIV? At the end where was she living? Thanks!
Watching it again would probably answer your questions.
Gregg was the owner/CEO of the company that produced Gatekeeper, the firewall software that was supposed to be unbreakable and protect everything. Of course, Gregg was aware of the backdoor to Gatekeeper, and leader of the Praetorians (them being a group of people in control of things behind the scenes, like the Illuminati..). And no, Angela did not know of Gregg, but she found out about the backdoor and had to be silenced.
She talked to a coworker at Cathedral. The man was supposed to come meet Angela in person, but his plane was tampered with, and he crashed into a building before he ever got to meet her...
The Senator killed himself in the beginning of the movie, because he was a known anti-gay activist.. and then found out he had HIV. He killed himself to spare his family (and himself, obviously) of the scandal that would ensue. The twist is, that he didn't REALLY have HIV, but his test results were altered by the Praetorians, so that he would either lose power or, as he did, commit suicide. The reason for this is that he was opposing widespread adoption of Gatekeeper - should it not be used in as many systems as it was, the Praetorians would have lost a significate amount of power.
Angela started a new life somewhere togethere with her mother. Not her old house, though.
thanks. did we ever see gregg though, did we ever think he was good? she never talked to him? i wonder how the senator thought he had gotten aids, that's awful. there was someone that told her about the guy's death with the plane crash. he told her and she said she'd call him when she got back. she called him and was told he no longer worked there. i wonder if he was killed too?
Anyway, Greg was the man she kept running into, who took her on the boat and so forth. First he wanted to find out how much she knew about the backdoor, then he needed her killed. It's a fairly straightforward plot, the only trouble in understanding it is in how it unravels. :) Like any really good intrigue, the plot changes, so it's not Sandra Bullock wondering through the story, she's part of the story as its happening.
Anyway, we saw greg plenty, and we thought he was good at first. In fact, he was one of the guys in the chat she was having that said "you're one of us". The senator thought he had gotten aids because he was tested as part of a regular physical. She found out about the guy's death because either her boss told her or she was told when she called in to Cathedral or it was his secretary or something. He was killed. His onboard flight navigation system told him he was somewhere and he was in radio contact with the airport at which he intended to land, but he was really somewhere else. Since his navigation system was wrong, and he was flying at night, he didn't see the buildings until it was too late. *He* was killed because he knew about the backdoor in the gatekeeper software, and the reason he was going to see her was because he knew about the backdoor, and he knew that knowing about it was dangerous and that people would try to take his life and he needed someone "outside" to know about it.
thanks. The person I was asking about worked at cathedral. he told her about that guy that died on the plane. she told him she would call him when she got back. she called when she got back and was told he didn't work there anymore. is that the same person, the one that was bad?
I didn't get that bit either, he just disappeared from the company with no explanation really, I think they said something about he no longer worked there but why?
Yup. At first when i watched it, i had similar questions. Thought to myself...well, if someone works for a company and they walk in and say who they are, then obviously people are going to know them or are going to have some sort of record of who they are?!!
Thing is, the guy (his name was Dale actually) got killed in a plane accident, and all of a sudden someone who called herself Angela Bennett (who was really the REAL Ruth Marks) turns up and starts working in the office. Surely she could've made up a bullsh*t story for why Dale disappeared, or a possibility the Praetorians (the people she was working for) could've sent the company some sort of resignation letter in the name of Dale or something. Sometimes plotholes like this are pretty good as it allows the audience to come to their own conclusions, but of course on the odd occasion, some people just go..."WOW WAIT A SEC! What about this? What about that?!"
Hi Nessa, I'll try to add some info...I hope it clears up any questions.
First, the man that Sandra Bullock's (Angela Bennett) character kept running from (the one who tried to kill her on the boat) was named Devlin. Devlin worked for Jeff Gregg (he was the CEO for the Gatekeeper program-the program that was supposed to be a source of protection for people who had there private lives and personal information in cyberspace).
The man named Dale (the one who was supposed to meet her before she went on vacation) established himself as someone who always sent Angela software with viruses so she could delete them. He sent them to her because she worked out of home and they never had the chance to meet. His calls were obviously tapped because they knew who to kill, and they knew that Angela was now involved because Dale sent her the disk with the "virus" on it and they probably assumed it was a matter of time before she realized what she had.
When Dale didn't show up, she called Cathedral (the company she works for) and asked for Russ Melborne (who was probably the main supervisor for that particular department--maybe her boss...and this is the guy who told Angela that Dale was dead). I don't why she didn't just ask for Dale, but I'm thinking it was probably because she figured he wouldn't be reachable since he was on his way to see her. And again, when she called Cathedral trying to reach Russ Melborne he was either killed or transferred (I guess that would be up to the viewer's imagination unless they completely laid that out for us, which they didn't). These Praetorians (the "bad guys" running the tainted Gatekeeper program) had to clean up any mess, so to speak, that came out of this program. If anybody was contacted from Angela or just anybody who found out about this program, they were most likely killed.
You had some other questions too in the original post, I'll go back and answer those.
I kind of answered some of these questions in the last post I made.
I think Davidfancella explained it best about the senator. Just to reiterate it again: the senator was a public opponent of the gay community (this was the button the Preatorians knew they could push to have power over him). They used this "power" to basically smear his name when he oppossed the bill to make the Gatekeeper the program that would be used for all of cyberspace. Again, like David said, by announcing to the world that he had AIDS, he would lose his credibility and his family as well as himself would be disgraced. So he took the option of killing himself. But in fact, he DID NOT have AIDS...it was the Preatorians using the Gatekeeper program to get inside his medical records and input the lie that he had AIDS.
As to where Angela was living at the end of the movie, I guess zer0kewl may have been right (about her living somewhere new) but I thought she was living in the same house. I thought she may have re-established that she WAS Angela Bennett and was able to get her house back. It looked the same with the exception that she took down all the plants and vines that blocked her house and became more open to the idea of not being so closed off and stand offish. But like I said, I can't really be sure that that was the same house, that was just my initial reaction when she walked out to help her mother plant some flowers.
