So awful that i couldn't watch it!

They just exagerrated the whole computer thing! It was painful to watch!

You are completely right about the overblown 'computer' nonsense. I agree.

But Sandra Bullock made it real easy to watch (...well, for *me*, anyway...)

reply

In one of my computer classes I'm taking right now, the computers are going to be down for a couple days and we are watching this movie until then. I've seen about 40 minutes worth, and that is by FAR enough.

Aim above morality. If you apply that to life, then you're bound to live life fully.

Treat the movie like Hackers; watch it assuming that the writers had a sick sense of humor and you're somehow in on the joke.

i found this movie great when i first watched it years ago, and now it has just aired again and i still love it! Snandra Bullock rocks! and the movie was entertaining! and evn if people think it's medicore, it was pretty damn good back in the day!

reply

No, it's just a total steaming pile of turd. It is watchable for the first half-hour, but when she wakes up in the hospital bed from the speedboat crash it quickly gets more ludicrous and goes downhill from there.
The outcome was totally predictable, I saw what happened before it happened with the FBI guy turning on her and the beardy doctor guy dying in hospital.

Ok i'll be honest, the only reason i watched this was to see Sandra Bullock in that black bikini in Mexico or wherever.

As this film was made in 1995, many people were (and a few still are) totally ignorant on the internet and the concept of cyber space and therefore might believe some elements of this film, my own father included, that is until i set him straight.

But how does this stuff ever get the go-ahead, when there's bound to be all these good scripts out there. How? How? HOW? I really like Sandra Bullock (and Jeremy Northham), but what the hell is going on???? It's almost not even a film, it's so bad!

reply

Maybe with regards to the acting etc and the general storyline of Sandra Bullock's character getting done over by some others might not be ok, then that's fair enough.

You have to realise though with this movie (same with Hackers, same with all/most computer related movies) is that the filmmakers have to make sure it appeals to people of all tastes and of computer literacy. True, to someone who works with computers everyday (i've been building them for the past 13 years - so i can appreciate what people mean when they say Hackers is sh*t!) then yes, of course it's going to be like....OMG...you n00bs, don't you know anything, come on...it's just NOT like that and you know it!
But to people who have never touched a computer in their life, or have no idea at all about PC's, then they're simply not going to understand the movie, and probably not buy the DVD or watch the movie at the cinema etc, which is obviously NOT what a filmmaker wants. They want people to understand the storyline and follow it for the action and thriller aspect, and not be completely baffled stupid by the computer bits of it.

Personally i found the movie quite good, the Praetorian stuff was a bit stale i guess (i mean, you don't really see real computer hackers strutting around with guns and stuff), but the storyline overall weren't bad. And yes, i've got it on DVD (hell...it was only £6.99).

Just watched it last night; my girlfriend and I laughed the whole way through. I get a kick out of movies like this and the equally excremental "Fair Game," another brain-dead mid-1990s movie where the bad guys have more or less supernatural powers because they can use a computer.

I think its quite a good film but as many said cut down on the computer nonsence!!

reply

As someone who studied computers and has been using computers for almost 20 years, movies like this always tend to be annoying-but-attractive. They're painful to watch....but I can never resist. It's theatrical, it's exaggerated on purpose, and it adds elements of drama and danger. It's all for fun. Takes things to the extreme. Look at HACKERS and WAR GAMES. Come on? But I like the former because Angelina looks young and hot, and I like the latter because it's old and funny.

I'm sure real police officers are sickened by their Hollywood representations - but that shouldn't make movies like Die Hard or Dirty Harry any less enjoyable -------- I'm a huge fan of this faux-hacker stuff - back when the internet was in its infancy (at least from a civilian standpoint) this was really exciting stuff! people were paranoid and really had no idea what the internet was all about... I also get a huge kick out of the unending barrage of blips and swips that accompany each on-screen flash... I wish my computer made those noises! and her chat program with the little customized graphic representations of the users ---- excellent stuff! haha... seriously - I dig this stuff... it takes me back to '95! pure nostalgia...

god i hated this film

The Net, is not supposed to be about getting every tiny bit of the computer make-up correct so the techonoligcal side of the movie is accurate, its supposed to be a thriller. Look past the couple of the mistakes with the computer crap and you'll see a good movie.

Exageration? Whatever!

This movie came out in 1995, when the internet was a new idea to everyone outside the computer science community. Perhaps in 1995 it was unrealistic, but not anymore, considering the growth of the internet and increased reliance by federal agencies. The forms of identity theft presented in the movie are all feasible today (a topic we spent I researched greatly while earning my Computer Science degree), but usualy seen implimented one-at-a-time. An organization with the right skills and the right access could impliment the "Gatekeeper" program today.

This is more subjective, but I think "Painful to watch" is unfair - few people would claim that Sandra Bullock is a bad actress, and I feel this might be her most compelling role.

Painful to watch? Go see "Cheerleader Ninjas," and then we'll talk.

All due respect,
