i don't care i loved the movie but...ip addresses

i loved the movie. i'm a geek, a hacker, a mac and unix fanatic. the majority of the movie was technically accurate except one scene, and i can't remember which one, but the ip address of gregg was totally wrong because you can't have more than 255 on the ip address and it was something like 365 or something like that. ha ha

i think i enjoyed it because angela bennet reminds me of myself: a computer geek loner who would prefer to order pizza over dinner, using macs and ignoring the rest of society.

and...she was actually a quality engineer and not a software engineer as the blurb says.

now the net 2...that SUCKED.

They couldn't use a real ip address, or even something that could be a real ip address for the same reason you can't use a real telephone number in movies.

I love how we see Sandra sitting around, eating M&M's and pizza from a greasy box, but she's still clear-skinned, very fit and has great hair.

No they weren't, but it's like a 555 telephone number. They use that prefix because it's not real so you don't have movie fans messing with somebody's real address or telephone number. I believe there is a similar one in "Anti-Trust" that the imdb won't count as a goof in their section because they consider it like a 555 telephone number.

Nobody outside of hardcore computer nerds used the internet back in 95 so I seriously doubt that Hollywood was afraid of using real life IP addresses for fear of ruining some completely random website. If they were smart they would have registered a website and used the IP address for that site in the movie.

Like Matrix, I fight for love.

There were a lot more inaccuracies in this movie than just the one you outlined. For the most part it was all techno babble, interwoven into a semi-decent plot. If anyone believes that The Net is an accurate representation of "Cyber terrorism", they are greatly mistaken.

And if they did it exactly accurately to satify your know-it-all perception, it would be socially irresponsible to give the public that kind of knowledge.

We, unfortunately, have to be pro-active in making information public, because there are a lot of nasty people who would take advantage of this knowledge.

I love the story line.
