The network gained a public face in the 1990s. In August 1991 CERN in Switzerland publicized the new World Wide Web project, two years after Tim Berners-Lee had begun creating HTML, HTTP and the first few web pages at CERN in Switzerland. In 1993 the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign released the Mosaic web browser version 1.0, and by late 1994 there was growing public interest in the previously academic/technical Internet. By 1996 the word "Internet" was common public currency, but it referred almost entirely to the World Wide Web.

I remember the internet back with Win 3.1 around 1994.

I definitely remember Prodigy in 93, maybe even 92.

Time sounds right. Had a 486 with Dos 6.22 & WIN 3.11, a 28k modem and (YUCK) AOL 2.5! Now that's funny!

Schoduck... I believe you've misquoted, as I've heard it, its:

"There are 10 kinds of people in the world... those who understand binary, and those who don't."

The way you've got it just doesn't make sense.

The world wide web was available in 1993.
And you need to learn how to use proper grammar and such...
But it's no wonder you can't though.
You don't even know when the Internet was invented.
All of you dimwit children with your stupid pop culture taking the Internet for granted...

It's not as if you've demonstrated a stronger command of the English language.

I had Prodigy in 1990. There weren't any web sites but there was a graphical interface and newsgroups.

I remember modems in the 80's.. you picked up a standard handset and placed it into a receptacle.

Acoustic coupler, ChefFlick. At about 110 baud rate, IIRC. And "fax" machines were round cylinders upon which you wound a sheet of paper, and it spun and spun, sending the images to the recipient's cylinder machine. Antediluvian, yes? :)

These kids do take technology for granted. I remember computers and the internet from the mid 90's. I am 24 now. But, you should know everyone takes things for granted in our country. Cell phones are a good example. Cell phones were around since the late 80's. They were only for the rich and they were huge. Generally, all of us take the phone for granted. It has been around since 1876. THe way people use it today you would think it is brand new invention. People get wowed by talking on a phone.

reply

ROARRRRRRRRRRR!!! Tff, metsman, because I was using a puter in the mid-80s, and we had the internet on a limited scale. First there was TheSource, the first nationwide internet for the public. Then it was sold to Compuserve, which cost a frackin' fortune to belong to. Not only a monthly service fee, but an HOURLY charge as well. A normal bill each month would run to $600 and up. Then CI$ changed to an hourly fee of .30 or so, which created an explosion of new members that we old-timers lovingly sneered at as "newbies."

So, you kids have missed out on a lot of puter history. I remember when 110 baud first became available and we thought we were WHIZBANG jet jocks on the internet. ROFL.. those were the days.

And, btw, cell phones were known as "mobile phones" in the very beginning because they could be carried, like an extra briefcase, which was about their size. So they were "mobile" but compared to today's phones, they were HUGE.

reply

It was before that. The first graphical web browser was available in 1993. Remember though that the Internet became public in 1983 (of course, there was no web back then).

So is the original poster insinuating that someone traveled back in time and invented the movie "The Net" because it couldn't have been around back then? Aparently it was otherwise the movie never woulda been made lmao

Plus remember she wasn't exactly a casual internet/computer user, it was her job and she probably had a school background in computers/tech stuff.

reply

I remember when this movie came out, there was a lot of hype because it was the first movie (at least the first mainstream movie) about the internet.

Everybody keeps commenting on the Web and confusing WWW with the Internet. The Web is just one small portion of the Internet. E-Mail is a huge portion of it, as is UseNet and believe it or not many places still use text-based programs that communicate via the internet.

The Web is just a subset of the Internet - and the Internet was widely used long BEFORE the web became prominent.

reply

And before the Web, how about those old timey dial-up bulletin boards?

I think the OP needs to see the film "War Games" with Matthew Broderick.

Wow, learn to search, all of you. "The Net" has been around since the 70's, simple tcp protocals for the army/government and what not. First email was late 70's/80's. At least it started gaining more popular when it got cheap and easier made by "AOL" back in the mid 90's around this time. I remember using AOL v1.0 on Win 3.1 back in 1995 when that *beep* started.

i've been using the Internet in one way or another since 1989. i started using the web sometime in the very early 1990s.

First time I ever used the internet was at a friend's house - in 1994. The term "the net" was known - although the internet was considered to be exceptionally nerdy, fostering ridicule from similarly aged teens. Not until the end of the 90s did those same people get online -- now it's the norm.

oh yeah! somebody mentions cell-phones above -- great point! Will you believe that when I got my first cell-phone back in 1995, kids in my class laughed at me - like it was the geekiest thing of all time. I can't believe how the opposite holds true today. Pop culture always ends up doing that kind of stuff!

I was one of the first people I know to have a cell phone-- and before that I had a pager. I remember there was outright hostility toward people who owned pagers. People assumed if you weren't a doctor then you must be a drug dealer. Why on earth would anyone need a pager? haha That attitude changed quickly, soon everyone had a pager, and then a cell phone.

I also remember having a rich friend who owned a computer and we thought she was a weirdo for it- the epitome of geekiness. She told us someday everyone would own a computer and we thought she was insane. I never thought the average person would need a computer or be able to afford one.

In the early 90s I remember seeing a preview for a movie and at the bottom of the screen there was the movie's website-- it got a lot of laughs from the people in the theater. It's amazing how things have changed in such a short period of time!
