why is the icon even in the game in the first place!?

also, does clicking ESC really retract sent emails!? i think not :p

Mozart ghost was a website or flash based app for a website. The icon was not meant to be in Mozart ghost and this is how Angela Bennett found out about them.

ESC in 1995 was possible as most email was application based, hiting ESC would have stopped to progress bar.

so the bad guys had hidden the icon in the app for certain people to use from anywhere in the world?

The PI symbol in the botton righthand screen was a logo to show that Gatekeeper protection was installed but it was away for the praetorians to gain access to what ever system had the state of the art protection installed, but the praetorians had made a backdoor in this software.
