Her mother isn't stupid, you are. She had dementia or alzheimers and it progressed to the point where that wasn't possible anymore. Did you even watch? Duh.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

Alzheimers as others have said. My grandmother got it pretty late in her life (gets worse faster if you get it earlier - and eventually is what kills you) and eventually it was:

"Oh you're home."
"Oh you!!!" Name after a while was completely gone.
After I had been working for 3+ years, "How's school!"

Eventually there was very little recognition. You could easily ask her, "What's my name?" and she'd not be able to figure it out. She'd response with, "Oh you know."

Very happy person, but mind was completely gone.
