It was most likely a program designed for the film.

I remember in 1996 stumbling upon a few chat interfaces similar to the one you are mentioning. I have no clue the name of these chat interfaces anymore... one was labeled... www.frechat....blah blah.com something or other. I last used it back in 1999. There was another one from this era too that was a ton of fun... you would go into these chat rooms as a "pengiun" like character and roam around in a small 3d environment... last I saw of that was in 2001 and only then, hardly anyone was using this "free" chat interface.

*sighs*... ahhhh the good ole days of the "internet".

I realize this post is a wee bit old, but I know exactly what you're talking about!

In the mid-to-late '90s, I used various types of software that allowed you to chat with other people using either custom avatars or some type of graphical images. I had such a blast until Microsoft decided to disconnect their servers and stop supporting the software.

I guess nowadays people use programs like Second Life if they want to interact with other people.

Here's what I used to use:

Microsoft Comic Chat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Comic_Chat

Microsoft V-Chat: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_V-Chat

I remember using IRC with people using MS Comic Chat as an interface. Filled your screen up with meaningless code. I used mirc, what any sane person used at the time and still do.

That "chat software" she was "using" was just a junk movie application, much like the garbage "operating systems" shown in that abomination of a movie.

Avatar (the names for the icons displayed) based chat software never really works as the size of the avatars and ancillary stuff reduces the effective size of the chat window so that only a small number of lines which is ok for one or two people but once you atart getting 5 or more people all chatting at once the scroll is too quick.

The writers should have actually studied how the Internet and computers work and then they would not have made such a godawful movie.

I could point out all the holes in the plot and the factual errors but I want to get out of here sometime in the nbext week.

iirc, the operating systems looked and acted a lot like MacOS... :/

It looks a lot like the first IRC client I ever used (back in '99 or 2000) called "Homer." "Homer" came on the MindSpring (my ISP at the time) install CD. Its icon was Homer Simpson's head. It seems like I was using either Mac OS 7.5.1 or Mac OS 8.

Hopes this helps you on your quest -- if it is the software.
