What book were they reading?

Hey does anyone know what book it is that they were reading during their night time literature reading? Maybe it was made up but if it's a real book, I'd like to know.

It was the Ramayana. It's an Indian epic.

I think she meant the dull book they were reading at the school. I'm curious too.

I have not found the answer yet. I will have to watch the scene again and try to get the character's names from the dull story. Miss Minchin tells Captain Crewe that the girls read the classics aloud before bed. The book is probably one of the classics like Little Women or Pride and Prejudice.

reply

seriously? LITTLE WOMEN? i take it youve nto read P&P either... they are FAMOUS for love and interesting plots not dullness like in that book plus Ive read LW front to back and theres nothing rmeotely like that -_-

reply

It's not a Jane Austen story. I'm familiar enough with all six of them. The character's name is Charlotte, that much I caught.

Here is what is read (before Sarah starts her own version):

Sir Edward saw the sorrow in his daughter's eyes, but he knew that family honor must prevail. Nobility was not to be trifled with. "I beg of you, Charlotte," he said. "'Marry Sir John in the spring, as he has asked."

Charlotte said to her father, "Father, you are right. I must put away my foolish fancies and childhood wishes."...

reply

Yeah. I've googled bits and parts, and I think it was just a bit of text made up for this film.

reply

That looks straight out of P&P

I believe it was " The Rosicrucian compendium of plant deviants" by herman Cront.

Am I the only one who thinks that book sounds kind of interesting?

reply

I actually think it could be an interesting story. I think the reason many of the young girls found the tale tiresome is because it was required reading, which always sucked the fun out of a book for me when I was in school. Also, gentle harp playing late at night does little to aid attentiveness. The combination of harp music and a warm fire would almost immediately put me to sleep.

I agree and think it was also the fact that they were reading in a bored monotone voice. I know for a fact that that can make otherwise interesting things boring.

Sara said that she "couldn't bear to see [the heroine] marry that awful man so I imagined a different ending." I can't remember for sure but I don't think they were at the end of the book. The girl had only just agreed to marry that man so there was probably plenty of time for her to get a happy ending.

This could be a good fanfiction exercise!

I believe it was Pride & Prejudice.

I may not have read Pride and Predujice but even I can recall that the main female heroine Lizzie in that book was one stubborn girl who would NEVER utter those words EVER
