My 7 year old begged
for me to turn this movie off and to put on the Shirley Temple version. She hated this new version, and while I liked the beauty of the sets and costumes, I didn't like the rest.

shareThe Shirley Temple version is horrible in comparrison to this. This version is beautiful and has so much heart. I felt like the Temple version was too cheesy and Temple was not that great an actress.
I love Temple in her younger years prior to The Little Princess. Once she hit about 9 or 10 she lost her spark though.

I find the original poster (jashobeam5)'s comment VERY hard to believe.
The Shirley Temple movie is a good movie but compares nothing to this, and would have no appeal to a seven year old.
I worked in a major Afterschools Activity program when this (1995) movie came out on video -- it was very popular with the girls and a few guys -- from 3rd grade to the 12-14 year olds -- I could NEVER get ANY kids to watch any Shirley Temple movie.
I saw the Shirley Temple version first. The first time I saw this (when I was maybe ten or eleven) I didn't like it as much. It was hard to understand how the war scenes fit with the rest of the story, and the ending was too dramatic for my tastes. But we watched this one a time or two and then I liked it better. It really is more heart-warming (in my opinion) and the way all the characters relate to Sarah in the Shirley Temple version just became too un-real. "I never thought nobody would have a room for my sweet little Sarah." I mean, really? A grown man?
