Yep, this ^^^. Velronewsletter hit the nail on the head. At the time this book was written, things were VERY different. Yes, child prostitution existed, and it in reality wasn't tolerated as much as people think it was, however, it was at the same time often overlooked if it wasn't occurring right in front of someone. And yes, I realize we're not talking about that here, but the fact is, this is what unfortunately comes to mind in today's times. When I was growing up, it was not unusual for a child's favorite teacher to be invited to dinner, or for a teacher and student to be friends (and nothing more). But (and this does sadden me) it's a fact that it cannot happen today.
There was an innocence to this tale (A Little Princess, and The Little Princess) that simply does not exist today. The Hindi man meant no harm. He was simply providing kindness to the girls when no one else was. Unfortunately, because of how things are today, he'd be arrested for doing what he did if this happened in modern times.
Of course, Minchin would also be arrested for her abuse over the girls.
EMOTICONS ARE BACK! YAY!
