Why am I the only one that thinks

It's just plain creepy and weird that Ram Dass sneaks in and decorates Sara's room and gives them a ton of food.

He spent enough time watching them, he should have known it would get them into trouble for one and breaking in just to decorate?

Just weird to me. Weird.

That's not how you were supposed to see it. The two girls wanted all those things, in their imagination, and the believed in it, and they got it. It was magic, which is one of the underlining themes in the movie. That believing enough in something enough will make it real, like magic. You're not supposed to think of it as him sneaking in and giving them all those things as they slept, but I can see how someone people would think that. I never did though. Of course that's the most logical reason behind it, but you're supposed to bypass that.

looking at it through modern eyes, of course it is. everything has changed, much more awareness of child safety is abound. i reread matilda the other day and realised that whatever time it was set in, teachers cannot invite children to their houses for tea anymore, even supervised. even if the teacher isn't up to anything suspicious, you can't take the chance. ram dass's actions are questionable to the modern audience but of course in the book and the time it was set it, it appears to be perfectly fine to do, especially as he did no harm. but yes, it does seem a bit suspicious to have a strange man sneaking around your room and redecorating at night

let's not go to camelot, it is a silly place

Again just me, but I still think even back then someone just walking in and dumping stuff in your house would be weird, child or not.

And yes I realize that it's supposed to be "magic" but in reality it was Ram Dass so I had to ask. As much as I love the movie it's still a little creepy lol

still agree with that

Yep, this ^^^. Velronewsletter hit the nail on the head. At the time this book was written, things were VERY different. Yes, child prostitution existed, and it in reality wasn't tolerated as much as people think it was, however, it was at the same time often overlooked if it wasn't occurring right in front of someone. And yes, I realize we're not talking about that here, but the fact is, this is what unfortunately comes to mind in today's times. When I was growing up, it was not unusual for a child's favorite teacher to be invited to dinner, or for a teacher and student to be friends (and nothing more). But (and this does sadden me) it's a fact that it cannot happen today.

There was an innocence to this tale (A Little Princess, and The Little Princess) that simply does not exist today. The Hindi man meant no harm. He was simply providing kindness to the girls when no one else was. Unfortunately, because of how things are today, he'd be arrested for doing what he did if this happened in modern times.

Of course, Minchin would also be arrested for her abuse over the girls.

Do you also think Santa is a child molester for sneaking into peoples houses and leaving them gifts and making small children sit on his lap in malls? Seeing everything through the paranoid lens of todays world must really limit your ability to appreciate fantasy in story telling...

I didn't say anything about child molesters. I said walking into someone's house and leaving a bunch of clothing and food there KNOWING IT WOULD GET THEM IN TROUBLE was weird. What is wrong with people that every post on imdb has to be turned into something perverted?

Please, you called him “creepy”. The implication of that word is obvious. And you accused him of being a grown man who spends all his time “watching” a little girl. And then you try back tracking on those words? Really? You are weirded out because you see a strange adult man who snuck into a childs room to give her gifts. You don’t seem to be able to suspend your modern real world notion of inappropriateness so you can appreciate the value behind the scene where a MAGICAL FANTASTICAL thing happened. And it happened because Sarah is a GOOD person who deserved it (like Santa again) and also to facilitate her coming over to the building next door and finding her father. It all makes logical sense in the context of the fairy tale story. And anyway its not really their “house”. Its an attic where she is forced to stay with no furnishings and no food. So Dass’s actions reinforce the metaphor of the possibility of miracles coming true. Its not “creepy” at all.

Yeah.. I've no time to waste arguing online with people that take everything to mean what they want it to mean. You people get way too wound up. Bye bye now.
