Wow what a great movie!
This was one of those films that I had always meant to watch but found myself putting it on the back burner. I finally streamed it online last night and was blown away. I have to say, I've never been a fan of Nic Cage. I always thought that there was no possible way he deserved the Oscar over Sean Penn in Dead Man Walking back in 95. Was he better than Penn? That's debatable, but after watching this performance I can say he damn sure was worthy of the Oscar. He was fantastic in this role. The chemistry between him and Elisabeth Shue, the score, and the story in general, make this film a damn near gem. When I first saw Julian Sands character, I figured the film was going to be about the drunk trying to save the hooker from the evil pimp while butting heads with him. I'm so glad I was wrong about that!
