Why didn't Ben want to get sober?

I get that he came to Las Vegas to commit suicide through alcoholism after he reached rock-bottom, but it seems like once he met Sera and they started their relationship, he might have some change of heart or see that are other options for him. Why was he so hell-bent on killing himself this way?

My view is that he didn't want to go through life any further by something other than the cards he was dealt, those being his addiction to alcohol. He views it as being truthful and accepting of who he is, not battling it or continuing to conform or get by somehow. I can see both sides. I can sympathize as well as empathize with Ben's decision and his chosen path, but ultimately I see it as weakness winning. Drug addiction and alcoholism are clear signs of mental weakness. This is just another side of the coin, most people in the world are not heroes and we shouldn't expect them to be. And we have no shortage of movies about super-heroes, if that's your thing.

While watching the movie I got the impression that he was punishing himself for something related to his family... not necessarily just letting them down by being a drunk, but something he felt he could never atone for -- possibly hitting his wife, or child. We saw how he had the capacity for violence in certain scenes. That's just my theory, but it might explain why he was so hell bent on ending his life, and though he was happy to go out in a blaze of glory with Sera, he wasn't prepared to put everything behind him and move on. Plus, I think deep down he knew they'd never really go the distance anyway!
