Cage went on a real drinking binge while filming

That's just something I heard. I'm not sure. Hands off to Cage if that was the case. Taking a bullet for the art of drama. :)

He was trying to get the speech patterns down so he could act drunk and not look like an ass. I don't think he did it to "prepare" for the role. He spoke to clinical alcoholics to do that.

Its better to burn out than fade away.

Oh I see.

He was actually drunk for some of the scenes. You can tell by how glassy his eyes are.

No rule against being drunk on a movie set, and getting into the role like that is part of acting.

reply

yeah man, Robert Shaw was drunk *beep* when filming "Jaws"; and to me, personally, thats one helluva performance.

reply

actually, spielberg scrapped the drunk footage of shaw. they reshot the scene the next day at shaw's request, while he was sober, and used that for the final cut.

yeah, did you see hearts of darkness? he was completely out of his mind and wasted as hell.

reply

Yeah, that was some crazy sad stuff, I wonder if he has ever said anything about that footage being shown. It has nothing to do with drinking, but another behind the scenes bit of footage that sticks with me is Jack Nicholson getting himself in the crazed state of mind he needed to be in for The Shining. I wish there was more of this type of thing out there.

If they didn't allow drunks on a movie set there would've been about 8 movies made through the 40's to the 60's....and Oliver Reeves would of been a cab driver or something.

I had a fish named Sam he lived in a bowl........

Who is Oliver Reeves?

reply

They wouldn't allow a drunk on a movie set.

You're kidding, right? There are dozens of authentic drunk scenes depicted in movies.

They wouldn't allow a drunk on a movie set.

Actually, when you try to enter a movie set, they give you a blood test. If they don't find any alcohol or drugs, you aren't allowed on the set. 100% truth

Not sure where you got that idea. There are plenty of drunks on movie sets, believe me. One example is Rock Hudson in Seconds. Frankenheimer's commentary actually says this was a great enhancement to the scene where he was supposed to be drunk...because he WAS. Duhhh.

For who would bear the whips and scorns of Hollywood... (;-p)

Robert Mitchum was drunk in most of his films. And he's arguably the greatest actor ever !

There were rumors that Johnny Depp drank while doing POTC.

reply

Anyone who believes that is a dunce. A production that costs that much, and you think there is a chance they would let him wander across screen drunk? He would have been fired in a heartbeat.

I am Jack's IMDb post.

Daniel Day Lewis drank watered down whiskey in THERE WILL BE BLOOD

The scene where Sere asks Ben to go and live with her (after they had dinner), he actually does look like he had been drinking. This movie is so good at potraying the shocking effects that alcohol can have on the system. Uncontrollable shakes, sweats etc.

He was drunk as hell in the scene where he kicks over the table and screams in the casino. At least that's what he says in his Inside the Actor's Studio interview.

He went on a 2 week drinking binge in Dublin prior to filming, with a friend there to film him whilst constantly wasted to get the mannerisms and speech patterns down. He wasn't drunk during the movie. Just good acting and makeup. He also studied clinical alcoholics.

Nicolas Cage drunk while playing a drunk?
It's possible, he really immerses himself in a role: In Vampire's Kiss he actually ate a live cockroach on screen.
