Still waiting for the Academy to make things right

Elisabeth Shue's portrayal of Sera was one of the greats of all time... and they give the Oscar to Susan Sarandon for that flat performance in Dead Man Walking??? If Sarandon had won for a previous performance she actually deserved it for... as Annie in Bull Durham... then the Academy wouldn't have had to make a make-up call in Sarandon's 4th quarter to make sure she got one before she retired. Disgusting. Sarandon won even over Merryl Streep. ARGH!

reply

Yeah, that's why the academy has no credibility. In fact I felt Sarandon deserved an oscar for DMW. That's the problem, when it rains it pours. Some years get like 10 insanely good movies and performances, and other years get none. Which is why Scorsese finally won an oscar for probably his worst film. Nothing for Goodfellas/Casino/Cape Fear, instead he gets it for that lump of crap The Departed.

Also, there are a million small independent films made each year that probably have the year's most incredible acting, but they don't even bother checking those. The whole award is a charade.

reply

What, The Departed is easily one of Scorsese's best films.... Much better than Cape Fear.

I agree he shouldve won Best Director earlier, but The Departed is still a masterpiece

reply

Cape Fear and The Departed were both remakes of other movies. With Cape Fear I felt they brought enough newness to it to make it interesting, and worth the remake. The Departed was too much like the original without bringing much new to the table, all they did was replace the Hong Kong actors with Hollywood ones and swap out the soundtrack for Rolling Stones hits.

reply

I absolutely despise Infernal Affairs, The Departed is a masterful remake.
Yeah the main plotevents are the same (duhh, it's a remake) but the story is much more fleshed out, the performances are all phenomenal, and it is much more thrilling.

reply

Shue should have won Best Actress that year.
She was my vote.

Susan sadly.... With many oscars... Was due. She did a great job for sure... Just not as good as Shue did.

Imagine if the Oscars just have it to the best performances every year.... Instead of politics & past dues.

What kind of world would that be.

reply

Another vote here for Shue.

She should have won.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

But Oscars are not the only film awards. Shue actually WON a few critics' awards for this part.

reply

I absolutely love this film but Sarandon was not a bad choice at all

How is it "disgusting"??

"Bltch, what you DON'T know about me -- I can just about squeeze into the Grand xxxxing Canyon!"

But these 'hacks' are the actual professionals who produce the movies! They are the Tom Hanks, Steven Spielbergs, and Streisands who have the large and loyal followings. Proof: How many people in your social circle have been invited to join the Academy, or even attend the Oscars as a guest? If the answer is 'Absolutely no one', what does that tell you?

reply

Yeah, Shue's performance touched me very deeply from the very early stages of the film. Even when her and Ben have their first night together, and he first asks her: "Just stay", repetitively. They zoom in on the expression on her face, the way she's looking up at him, her instant relation to his longing, the instant feeling of fulfillment through being wanted, she nailed it - I started crying right there. It was beautiful.
