Trailer + women's reaction

So I have the directors cut on DVD and I showed the trailer to some friends (one was a girl) to see if it was something they wanted to watch. Needless to say, the tone of the trailer was completely different than that of the film; it made it look like a sleazy, poorly made dark dramedy (with a terribly corny voice over making it worse) and totally turned them off. The girl in the group in particular was vocal of her opinion of it and went on sort of a rant saying how it disgusted her that a drunk nicolas cage (I guess she doesn't like him) could just "buy a woman's love" and gawked at the fact that it was a romantic drama.
So I guess my question for you guys is what do you think of the trailer? I believe it did a good job at showing exactly what it was about plot wise but totally misfired in portraying the true spirit of the film.
Given the reaction of my friend I also just wanted to know if there are any women out there that are fans of the film. Do you love it? Hate it? And why? Looking forward to your replies! Thanks for reading!

I both love it and hate it!!! But I can relate to the self-destructive aspects and the sorrow. Although sometimes it is hard to watch because the experience is so intense.
