Why does this film get to me? **possible spoilers alert**

I am halfway through my second viewing of this film in the past 3 days. I simply cannot get it out of my head. Perhaps I relate to the alcoholism and sex work, as both are a part of my life. I am a functioning alcoholic who takes regular detox breaks just so I don't get the DT's like Nicolas Cage does in this film. (I went through that once and never **ever** again) I also work as a camgirl doing live sex shows. This is nowhere near the extremities portrayed in the film, and from an outside perspective I think people would oversimplify and say that is why this film gets to me. My love of booze and hustling.

But oh, it is so much more. I am touched by the profound gift of truly unconditional love. I am intrigued by the fan theories that he is dead all along. I notice the angel symbolism EVERYWHERE (In the office the day he is fired, in Sera's apartment, etc...) Perhaps unconditional love is the thing we all crave, and that is why the film affected so many people including sober and non sex working people.

But really I would love an outside perspective. Did this movie get to you? What about it got to you? What did you notice about this film that stood out and made you think? What do you think of the fan theory?

I can see a lot of people think it's a worthless story about a worthless drunk. I simply don't get that. I see something profound, and I would love to explore the topic further with you lovely people.

Nice post. I find this film uplifting, which can be counter intuitive, but you have mentioned one reasons yourself, unconditional, or rather non judgemental love. Sera gets nothing from Ben, nothing at all that one can expect in a relationship. There is a vanity in Ben's self destruction, but Sera does not even have that luxury. But caring is its own reward, it gives her a purpose to live.

What do you mean by detox breaks?

There was another reference to angels you didn't mention. They made a point of spelling Sera's unusual name. SERAphim are a type of angel.

Oh, I hadn't thought of that. I thought of "que sera sera," whatever will be will be.

Good post.

For me, the movie gave me a taste of sadness because of how those two really were. The first watch is all the time very hard to see.

Remember, remember the 5th of november

Ben does give Sera something: complete honesty.
