I just sat through this and fail to see the point of it all.
Cage's character did not overcome his addiction to alcohol, and had a fleeting friendship with a whore.
That's it.
There was no character development; it left me feeling nothing but sorrow for people who live these types of lives.

Sad, but reality is that it doesn't turn out good for most alcoholics out there.
I felt the same way when I saw this. Waste of time. I don't need a happy hollywood ending most of the time, but seems like this movie didn't need to be made.

Both Ben and Sera were believable characters with depth and personality. I think you may be thinking of a character arc, which is when a character changes over the course of the story. Characters don't necessarily have to change.

I'm sure others enjoyed it (and I have no problem with that), but I really don't care for the lives of scum unless they help someone else or overcome their self-destructiveness. It was interesting at best, but a film I won't bother to watch again.
