Judy and Peter Remain the Same Age Thorough the Entire Movie

One of the difficulties of filming with children is that children are constantly growing, which means that, if a filming takes too long, the change of age and size will be obvious to the audience. Robt Wise certainly had that problem while directing the seven von Trapp children in THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
Dunst and Pierce--both born in 1982, which means that Judy and Peter are fraternal twins--look the same thorough the entire movie; how did Johnston achieve that effect? Did he film all their scenes at one sitting?

Filming took place from November 1994 to April 1995, only 5 months.

reply

That is good to know; Mr Johnston obviously employed his time well.

I never thought that Judy and Peter are fraternal twins. The actors might have been born in the same year, but it always seemed to me that Judy was the older sister and Peter was the younger brother.

I agree. Mostly because Kirsten seems to be taller than Brad.

Um, at the risk of stating the obvious, the fact that the ACTORS are the same age doesn't make the CHARACTERS the same age! Duh.

^THIS!^

At the end of 'Jumanji' Robin Williams' character sees Judy and Peter's parents at a Christmas party! I believe the mom is pregnant with Peter and Judy is already born but I could be mistaken.

The pregnant mom is Sarah, now the wife of Alan; the fraternal twins are there with their parents, and A and S are very happy to meet them ,,again''.

reply

Watched it again. Sarah is indeed pregnant, but they do not say at any point that the kids who are attending the Christmas party with their parents are twins.

reply

It's a logical conclusion based on the fact that both Dunst and Pierce were born in 1982.

reply

Actor's actual ages have nothing to do with any of their roles. I remember when my kids were watching Dawson's Creek and they had a bunch of people in their 30's playing teenagers.

reply

Would you believe Judy being one year older than Peter? I wouldn't.

reply

As someone who had three kids in five years, yes, I would. Why not?

reply

Do you have a picture of your three when the oldest was thirteen? The thing about fraternal twins is that they can look very different, even to the point of seeming to have different ages. That is why I rely on the real life age of Dunst and Pierce.

reply

That is, again, nothing to rely on. The ages of actors have NOTHING to do with the ages of characters they play. I can give you a hundred examples of that from Judy Garland playing a ten year old in the Wizard of Oz when she was actually 17 to Sean Connery playing Harrison Ford's father in an Indiana Jones film when they were only 12 years apart. They do not look at the age of the actors when they cast- only how they look together and how good their chemistry is. But I'm not going to bother to argue the point anymore.
Have a good day.

reply

Really? Garland's Dorothy is an awfully big ten year old.

reply

I have a good one too.
Doc from Back to the Future was only 47 in the first movie,
He could have played Doc today how he looks now.

reply

Are you suggesting that Judy and Peter were not played by children?

reply

Haha not at all :P

I know for a fact that Kirsten Dunst (Julie) was a kid back then. She also played Claudia in interview with a vampire.
You do however see adults playing kids. Take Hannah Montana's brother in Hannah Montana. He's supposed to be 16, he's around 30 when he played that role.

Someone else started listening actors who was older than the age they played.

Marty Mcfly however wasn't a kid like he played in Back to the Future. Michael J Fox was 25 in the first movie. He played a 16 - 17 year old :P

reply

Children don't have as much latitude as adults when playing roles that are not their age; Judy Garland's Dorothy Gale most definitely does NOT look ten.

reply

The point is an actor's age is not necessarily a character's age. Even a child actor.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

The movie does not specify the age of the siblings, so, unless the book is more specific, I base my estimate on the actual age of Dunst and Pierce, who were born on the same year.

reply

We all know you do. But as many have said, that's often more hit than miss.

I always thought Judy was 1 or 2 years older than Peter. I didn't know the actors who played them were the same age until I read this thread.

As it has been pointed out, just because actors are the same age it doesn't mean their characters are. A few examples of this inclde;

Modern Family - Ariel Winter (Alex), Nolan Gould (Luke) and Rico Rodriguez (Manny) were all born in 1998. On the show Alex is two years older than Luke and Manny.

Malcolm in the Middle - Frankie Muniz (Malcolm) was about three months older than Justin Berfield who played Malcolm's older brother, Reese.

Home Improvement - Jonathan Taylor Thomas (Randy) is a month older than Zachery Bryan (Brad). On the show, Brad is a year older than Randy.

National Lampoon's Vacation - Anthony Michael Hall (Rusty) was 14 years old when the movie was made. Dana Barron (Audrey) was 16. But Rusty was older than Audrey in the movie. According to Dana Barron, the script was originally written with Audrey as the older sibling. But it was changed when Hall had a growth spurt and overtook Barron (and onscreen mother Beverly D'Angelo) in height.

European Vacation - Dana Hill (Audrey) was 4 years older than Jason Lively (Rusty).

Someone's at the door

reply

Whoever said Judy's character was 10 in the Wizard of Oz? Is it written that way in the book? She looked to be at least 15 and I don't recall them saying she was 10 in the movie

As for this thread no one ever said the kids were twins

reply

The character of Dorothy is 10 in the book, 11 in the sequel return to Oz

reply

Actors growing older can sometimes be a problem, but rarely so obvious as with Lord of the Rings.

Filming for the entire trilogy started in 1999, and pickups for Return of the King were shot in 2003.

Those 4 years are most striking on Elijah Wood's face, who was only 18 when it started.

But it has a strange effect on all the hobbits -- it's strange that they all seem to get fatter as the journey goes along.
