In the end, the clones show up and dissappear. What the hell happened?

Reportedly, in the original ending the clones emerge from their tanks and are gunned down by Dredd, exploding like watermelons when they're hit. The studio edited all this footage out to secure a lower (and more box office friendly) age rating.
