The best/funniest scene by far is

...when the turkey lands in Joanne's lap and then Leo and Claudia take it over her head. Her reaction is priceless!! What's funnier is that her own father was laughing at her. Classic!!!

Yes, the father laughing is the best! Then he gets a little upset because some turkey juice gets splashed on his tie ... while his daughter is sitting here drenched in it. Love this movie.

I love that part where he gets upset about the little spot on his tie. The other one for me is when they pick up the aunt and she farts in the car and everyone is like "uhhh.." and then she says "So how fast can you go Tommy?" and he's like "Like the wind honey" hahaa

reply

When the mother has a kind of mini-nervous breakdown in Claudia's room and starts reciting Dear Abbey. Uncomfortably funny.

reply

Gee....
My favorite scene was when the aunt beefs it in the car. That gives you a glimpse into what I happen to find funny...
That's probably why I didn't think this movie was "all that."

Trust me,
Swan
My, you're nosey, aren't you?

It sucked. 5/10.

"Sad Sack Terziak"
:-)

reply

Yeah, I think I have to go with that, also! He's SO sad and tragic (and Strathairn's brilliant), that it becomes comical... and with Tommy making faces at Claudia at the same time, you can see her struggling between laughing and sympathizing. Then Tommy cutting celery very purposefully, as Terziak walks by, like he hasn't been listening... Ah-hahaha!!
The whole dynamic between all the characters (including the mother, inviting him over in the first place!) is just classic.

This brings to the forefront how uncomfortable so many holiday situations are for so many people, and it's not funny for them when it's happening. It carries over to the next year and the next.
But we can step away and see how common all this upset is, and find humor in it.
I think we are laughing through the pain, trying to make the best out of how sad it really is. And they are our closest relatives, and we have to love them. Who are you if you don't love your closest relatives?

This scene is actually more sad to me than it is funny. Really, the Joanne character in general is incredibly tragic.

reply

Yes. Sad, cruel and stupid! Definitely NOT funny!

reply

No, it's not funny and things have gone wrong. For me, the situation has become ambiguous as to how much of a Harpy she has become and what her comeuppence should be.
No, it's not right or fair, but would Charlie Chaplin have backed off for making a stooge look like a stooge?

And the Drama Queen comment makes sense. But she gets to have her say as well.
This has many facets to the comedy scenario. To limit oneself to the most obvious aspects is to rob yourself of the richness of the greater aspect. It's Tragic, It's Funny ! It's not a Great Movie, but it's A Lot Better Than What you Normally Get !
Broaden your minds, people. This is a fun and realistic look at middle class life, warts and all.

Pretty much all of the dinner scene.

reply

Joanne should have went outside and destroyed Tommy's car.

That scene was stupid and cruel! NOT funny at all! This movie sucked: 5/10.
