DiCaprio, who is an avid hip-hop fan was a fan of Ice Cube and was originally going to play Remy with Michael Rapport playing Cole Hauser's role, the lead skinhead. But dropped out shortly after Tupac and unfortunately did Quick And The Dead.
Tupac was a lock for Malik but his legal problems got in the way and the studio wouldn't finance it with him so he had to drop out. He said that him and Singleton came up with the story when both worked together on Poetic Justice.
Singleton, before his death, said he regrets not getting them as it would have been stratospheric with them leading the film.
