But if you want a strictly film-based answer, I would have to say they are equal. There's a reason Michael Mann put them together in Heat: They are equal, and similar, talents. Both have are about equally talented in terms of performance and in terms of the films they have appeared in.

Joaquin Phoenix said Robert De Niro inspired him and his brother River to become actors. Ethan Hawke said the best actors for him are Nicolas Cage, Robert De Nino, and Meryl Streep.
