What was with this couple in the "On the Open Road" number?

The couple that was singing "Just a week of rest and relaxation, and the odd romantic episode", and Max replying with "very odd"? Were they a gay couple?

Either Max finds the contrast between the couple (the short, bald husband and the huge homely wife) a weird romantic pair, OR his teenager 'young is cool/old is not' mindset finds any romance between an older couple strange.

That's what I always wondered, but no, it turns out that that huge hulking thing IS a woman.
