i really enjoyed get shorty and the look at hollywood, i was wondering if anybody could reccomend or name films which are similar to get shorty and have a hollywood theme. also has anybody got any good ideas for a sequel straight after the end of get shorty
I've seen BOTH OUT OF SIGHT and OCEAN'S 11 and while I do enjoy them both, I don't think either one is CLOSE TO being a better film than GET SHORTY. I love all of Elmore Leonard's books, and most of the film adaptations, but when I was lucky enough to meet Elmore a few years back, I remembered him saying he liked GET SHORTY the best of them all, probably followed by JACKIE BROWN. (Now I realize that OCEAN'S 11 is NOT an Elmore Leonard adaptation, but OUT OF SIGHT is, so I thought it relevant.)
Again, I am VERY partial to GET SHORTY, but that's me. I don't know about the other two being better part ... that's something new that was just added.
I never realized Jackie Brown was written by the same guy as Get Shorty. I always thought they had the same kinda feel to them guess I never put two and two together.
I too say save yourself the broken heart, just don't watch Be Cool resist the temptation. Jackie Brown may have the same feel but it's without the hollywood part. The only movies I can think of that have a hollywood kind of theme are:
Boogie Nights - it's the porn side of hollywood although there isn't THAT much nudity for a movie about the adult film industry
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - which you kind of need to watch the other 4 Kevin Smith movies with Jay and Silent Bob to fully appreciate
Pauly Shore is Dead - which I wouldn't reccommend unless you like Pauly.
be cool (the sequal to get shorty) is hilarious it stars john travolta uma thurman the rock harvey keitel and vince vaughn (among others) also oceans eleven and twelve have a similar kind of humour and style as get shorty and be cool
How can you not like Big Trouble, that movie was funny as hell. All of the cast did a great job. Jason Lee was so funny in that movie and I loved the music.
For my money, Leonard Elmore's Big Bounce and Carl Hiaasin's Strip Tease are both right up there. colorful 'way out there' characters and satyric humor abound in both.
Elmore's Touch is also worthwhile, as is The Crew w/ Burt Reynolds.
To begin with, if you love Get Shorty, please save yourself time, money, and probably a broken heart and do not see Be Cool. It's just a bunch of cheap laughs an a knockoff of Get Shorty.
But...there is salvation.
I would suggest seeing Pulp Fiction..John Travolta again, playing a gangster lackey with his partner, played by Samuel L. Jackson. They're very similar...only Get Shorty is more of a comedy, although Pulp Fiction has it's funny moments. Both have great soundtracks though.
I strongly suggest Swimming With Sharks. It is about an assistant to who is essentially Jerry Bruckheimer finally snapping after having to deal with all of his BS for 2 or 3 years. Very amusing insider look, and a good movie as well.
Stars Kevin Spacy as the film exec (who just gets to ham it up and have a blast), and frank whaley (I think) as the assistant. It rules.
get shorty was good and reconmending oceans 11 is a must and if you like be cool then check out the itian job, made by the same people that made be cool.
By "same people" you mean one person, the director. BE COOL and THE ITALIAN JOB are very different movies and while F GARY GRAY did a decent job on the latter, he was a terrible director for BE COOL. Even if you happened to like the movie (which I cannot understand, because it was awful, but I digress...), you cannot escape the fact that the direction was quite poor, especially when taking GET SHORTY into consideration. A sequel should never have such a dramatically different feel than the first movie.
